Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

The laptop screen glowed brightly in the quiet cabin living room.
Dr. Vance, Marcus, and Leah hovered over the screen as the files on the USB drive unlocked.
Simone’s investigation was staggering. Dr. Celia Rusk hadn't just targeted Leah. Over the past six years, at least fourteen young, vulnerable mothers—mostly women without strong family networks or married into powerful families like the Carvers—had been falsely diagnosed with severe postpartum psychosis at Briar Glen Pavilion.
Their children had been legally transferred to wealthy adoptive families or controlling relatives using falsified medical holds.
Doreen Carver wasn't just a donor to the hospital; she was the main financial silent partner of Dr. Rusk’s black-market adoption network.
And buried deep in the financial ledgers was a document dated three months ago: a contract signing over the legal guardianship of Leah’s unborn child to Doreen Carver in exchange for forgiving a $1.2 million debt owed by Nathan Carver’s failing real estate firm.
Leah gasped, tears of horror spilling onto her cheeks.
"He sold our baby," Leah whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Nathan sold his own son to pay off his business debts to his mother."

Marcus slammed his fist onto the wooden table. "That miserable coward."
"We can't just run," Leah declared, her eyes transforming from fear to an icy, unbreakable resolve. "If we just run, they will use their money and police connections to track us down forever. We have to destroy them."
