Chapter 15 - The Midnight Intrusion

The clock on the mantelpiece in the grand bedroom struck 2:14 a.m.

The Vale estate was wrapped in absolute silence, save for the rhythmic patter of autumn rain beginning to tap against the large leaded glass windows. Inside the master suite, Adrian lay awake in the king-sized bed, one arm wrapped securely around Sophie, who was sleeping peacefully against his chest.

Despite his exhaustion, Adrian’s mind was racing. He had deployed three private intelligence teams to track the Holloway Foundation's corporate filings, but every digital trail led to dead ends in the Cayman Islands and anonymous post office boxes in Zurich.

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from somewhere downstairs.

It wasn't the wind. It wasn't the settling of old timber. It was the distinct sound of a security latch being forced open near the ground-floor service entrance.

Adrian moved with instantaneous, practiced precision. He eased his arm away from Sophie, slipping out of bed without making a single sound. He walked over to the custom walnut armoire against the wall, unlocked the hidden biometric compartment inside, and withdrew a sleek, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, checking the magazine with practiced fluidity.

He pulled on a dark wool sweater over his sleep trousers and turned back toward the bed.

Sophie’s eyes were open. In the dim moonlight filtering through the curtains, her gaze was calm, steady, and entirely awake.

"Stay here," Adrian whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Lock the bedroom door behind me. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice giving the passcode."

"Adrian, be careful," she whispered back, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek.

"Always," he replied.

Adrian stepped out into the dark hallway, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him. The corridors of the manor were pitch black, illuminated only by the faint green glow of emergency exit lights. He moved silently along the carpeted runner, descending the grand staircase toward the ground floor with the stealth of a predator.

As he reached the bottom landing, he heard muffled footsteps coming from the direction of the east wing—the private study and the estate archives.

Click.

A small beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness near the study door.

Adrian slipped behind a towering bronze statue of a 19th-century cavalry officer, raising his weapon as he waited for the intruder to emerge from the hallway.

A figure dressed head-to-toe in black tactical gear crept out of the study, holding a heavy leather briefcase in one hand. The intruder turned down the hallway toward the service exit.

"Drop the bag," Adrian’s voice cut through the darkness like a whip.

The intruder froze instantly, whipping around with a suppressed pistol raised toward the voice.

Before the intruder could acquire his target, Adrian closed the distance with terrifying speed. He lunged forward, striking the man’s wrist with the butt of his pistol, sending the weapon clattering across the polished marble floor.

With a sweeping kick, Adrian dropped the intruder to his knees, slamming him against the wall with his forearm pressed hard against the man's throat.

"Who sent you?!" Adrian demanded, his voice a low, lethal growl. "Who is funding the Holloway Foundation?!"

The intruder let out a raspy, choking laugh. He wore a black balaclava, but as Adrian yanked the mask down, the face revealed beneath it was young—no older than twenty-five—with a familiar, sharp-featured jawline.

"You're too late, Vale," the young man choked out, blood trickling from his lower lip. "The files from your grandfather's safe... they're already copied. The truth about how your empire was founded is already on its way to the federal prosecutor's office."

Adrian pressed his forearm harder against the man's throat, his grey eyes blazing. "Give me a single reason why I shouldn't hand you over to federal marshals right now to rot in a supermax prison."

"Because..." the intruder wheezed, a manic grin spreading across his face, "my employer isn't trying to destroy you legally, Adrian. He's coming for your wife. And you can't protect her from a ghost."

Before Adrian could interrogate him further, the security alarms across the estate suddenly blared to life with a deafening screech, and red emergency strobe lights flooded the hallways.

In the split second of sensory distraction, the intruder slammed his heel down onto Adrian’s instep, wrenched his arm free, and hurled himself through the stained-glass side window, shattering the glass into a thousand glittering shards as he dropped toward the terrace below.

Adrian rushed to the broken window, leveling his pistol, but by the time he looked out into the rain-swept courtyard, the intruder was already sprinting toward the tree line, vanishing into the darkness of the North Woods.
