Chapter 7 - The Morning After

Dawn broke over Lake Forest in a brilliant display of gold, pink, and clear blue sky.

The heavy snow and rain from the night before had washed the city clean, leaving the vast lawns of the Vale estate sparkling under the morning sun.

Inside the master bedroom, Sophie woke up to the warm, comforting scent of fresh coffee and rich pastries.

She opened her eyes, stretching comfortably beneath the silk sheets.

Adrian was sitting on the edge of the bed, wearing a soft grey sweater and dark trousers, looking rested, powerful, and completely undamaged. A silver breakfast tray rested on the nightstand beside him.

Sophie sat up, pulling the sheets around her chest, a soft blush rising on her cheeks as she remembered the intense, passionate kisses they had shared before he left.

"You're back," she whispered, her eyes searching his face for any sign of injury. "Are you alright?"

"I am perfect," Adrian said softly, reaching out to gently push a lock of hair behind her ear. "Because you are safe."

"What happened at the docks?"

"Victor Moretti will no longer be a concern for us," Adrian replied simply, handing her a delicate porcelain cup of coffee. "Or for anyone else in Chicago."

Sophie looked into his calm grey eyes, understanding the unspoken reality of his words. She knew who Adrian was. She knew the dark, violent world he operated in. But looking at the gentle warmth in his hands as he poured cream into her cup, she knew that violence would never touch her.

"What happens now?" Sophie asked softly, taking a sip of the warm coffee.

Adrian pulled a sleek velvet box from his sweater pocket, setting it on the tray between them.

Sophie set her cup down, her heart fluttering as she looked at the box. "What is this?"

"Open it," he said.

Sophie reached out with trembling fingers and lifted the lid.

Inside rested Claire Vale’s diamond and sapphire bracelet—the priceless heirloom that Evelyn had used to accuse her, the bracelet that had started the entire nightmare. It shone brilliantly under the morning sunlight pouring through the windows.

Sophie gasped, looking up at him in shock. "Adrian... no. I can't accept this. This belonged to your mother."

"My mother was a woman of immense strength and kindness," Adrian said softly, taking the bracelet from the box. "Before she died, she told me to give this to the woman who would one day bring warmth back into this house."

He reached for Sophie’s left wrist, gently fastening the diamond band around her arm. The blue sapphires sparkled against her soft skin, fitting her perfectly.

"Evelyn tried to use this to destroy you," Adrian said, holding her hand gently in his. "Now, it belongs to you. As proof that you are the mistress of this estate."

Sophie looked at the sparkling bracelet, then at the man sitting beside her—a billionaire, a king of the city, a man who had brought down an empire just to protect her honor.

"I love you, Adrian," she whispered, the words spilling from her heart naturally, without fear.

Adrian’s breath hitched. A rare, breathtaking smile broke across his handsome face—a smile of pure, unadulterated joy that transformed him completely.

He leaned in, taking her face in his hands, kissing her lips with sweet, profound reverence.

"I love you, Sophie Carter," he whispered against her mouth. "With everything I am."
