Chapter 4 - The Highway Ambush

The metallic crunch of collapsing steel echoed inside the cab as the Mercedes ground to a violent halt against the concrete guardrail. Smoke billowed from under the crushed hood, smelling of hot oil and ozone.
Inside the rear passenger compartment, total darkness reigned, broken only by the flickering red hazard lights on the dashboard.
Sophie gasped for air, her mind reeling, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She was crushed against a solid wall of muscle. Adrian’s arms were wrapped around her like steel bands, his hand cupping the back of her head, pressing her face securely against his chest.
"Sophie," his voice came through the dark, rough and urgent. "Are you hit? Did you break anything?"
"I... I don't think so," she stammered, trembling violently against him. "Mr. Vale—what happened?"
"Stay down," Adrian commanded sharply.
He released her gently, pushing her down into the footwell between the seats. From under his arm, he pulled a compact black semi-automatic pistol from a hidden shoulder holster inside his tailored suit jacket.
Up front, the driver’s side door was jammed shut. Mason, who was riding in the front passenger seat, spat blood onto the dashboard, drawing his own weapon. "Two vehicles, boss! They T-boned us from the blind spot!"
Outside, through the shattered, tinted windows, heavy footsteps crunching over glass could be heard.
"Vale!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted through the rain. "Step out of the car with your hands up! Victor wants you alive, but he didn't say anything about keeping you pretty!"
Sophie covered her mouth to suppress a scream. Victor Moretti. The name echoed in her mind.
Adrian did not hesitate. His grey eyes were completely devoid of fear—only an icy, lethal focus remained. He reached down, gripping Sophie’s shoulder reassuringly. "Stay on the floor. Do not move until I tell you to."
"Adrian, please—be careful!" she cried out, using his first name for the first time without realizing it.
A dark smile touched the corner of Adrian’s mouth. "Always."
Adrian kicked his door open with immense force, slamming the heavy reinforced armor plate into the chest of the first gunman standing outside! The man flew backward onto the wet asphalt with a crack of broken ribs!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Gunfire erupted across the rainy highway! Adrian rolled out of the vehicle, using the armored rear quarter panel as cover, firing three precise shots into the dark figures advancing through the fog! Mason scrambled out the opposite side, providing crossfire that pinned the remaining three attackers behind their black pickup truck!
Inside the crushed interior of the Mercedes, Sophie lay on the floor, shaking uncontrollably, listening to the terrifying roar of weapons discharged just feet away. She could hear the rain hammering on the roof, the shouts of dying men, and the calm, rhythmic sound of Adrian’s weapon returning fire.
Suddenly, the rear driver’s side window shattered completely!
A thick, leather-gloved hand reached through the broken glass, grabbing Sophie violently by her hair, dragging her upward toward the window!
"Got one of 'em!" a scarred, muscular gunman yelled, pulling his combat knife from his belt, pressing the sharp blade against Sophie’s throat! "Drop the gun, Vale, or I slit your pretty maid's neck wide open!"
Sophie gasped, the cold steel pressing into her skin, her hands clawing desperately at the man's heavy arm.
The gunfire instantly stopped.
Silence fell over the rainy highway, broken only by the idling engine of the attacker's truck.
Adrian stepped out from behind the rear bumper. He did not lower his gun, but his eyes locked onto the man holding Sophie.
The transformation in Adrian’s face was terrifying. The icy, refined billionaire was completely gone. In his place stood a monster—a man possessing an ancient, savage rage that made even the hardened mercenary holding the knife flinch.
"Let her go," Adrian said. His voice was not loud. It was a raspy, quiet growl that carried over the sound of the falling rain.
"Put the gun on the hood, Vale!" the gunman screamed, pulling Sophie’s head back further, drawing a tiny droplet of blood from her neck. "Put it down or she dies right now!"
"If you scratch her skin by one more millimeter," Adrian said softly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, "I will peel the flesh from your bones while you are still breathing. I will hunt down every member of your family. I will erase your name from existence."
The sheer, absolute conviction in Adrian’s voice terrified the gunman. His grip on the knife hesitated for a fraction of a second.
That fraction was all Adrian needed.
BLAM!
Adrian fired directly through the Mercedes’s rear side panel! The high-caliber round tore through the door frame and struck the gunman squarely in the shoulder, shattering his bone!
The man shrieked in agony, dropping the knife and releasing Sophie!
Before the man could recover, Adrian surged forward like a thunderbolt, grabbing the gunman by his tactical vest, dragging him through the broken window frame, and slamming his head violently onto the concrete guardrail!
The man collapsed, unconscious and bleeding into the gutter.
Adrian immediately turned his attention into the car. He reached inside with both arms, effortlessly lifting Sophie out of the wrecked vehicle, pulling her tight against his chest as rain poured down over them both.
"I have you," Adrian whispered harshly, his chest heaving as he buried his face in her wet hair. "I have you, Sophie. You're safe."
Sophie wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, sobbing hysterically into his shoulder, her entire body shaking from terror and relief. She didn't care about the rain. She didn't care about the dead men lying on the highway. She only knew that inside Adrian Vale’s arms, surrounded by his power and his terrifying love, she was entirely, undeniably untouchable.
Mason hurried over, holding a radio to his ear. "Backup is thirty seconds out, boss. State police are shutting down the highway." He looked down at the unconscious attacker, then at Adrian. "It was a hit team from South Side. Victor is getting desperate."

Adrian looked up from Sophie, his face wet with rain and blood, his grey eyes burning with absolute, total destruction.
"Call the captains," Adrian ordered Mason, his hand holding Sophie tightly against his heart. "Tell them we meet at the docks at midnight. It’s time to burn Victor Moretti’s empire to the ground."
