Chapter 8 - The Transformation

Over the next three months, the Vale estate underwent a total, stunning transformation.

The cold, oppressive atmosphere that had ruled the mansion under Evelyn’s reign was completely gone. Bright flowers filled the grand halls; the sound of music echoed through the drawing rooms; light poured through uncurtained windows.

Under Sophie’s leadership as the new Director of Estate Management, the domestic staff's working conditions were overhauled completely. Wages were increased, hours were normalized, and an open-door policy was instituted where every employee was treated with dignity and respect.

The housekeepers who had once looked down on Sophie now treated her with genuine affection and admiration, realization dawning on them that her kindness was the greatest blessing the estate had ever received.

On a bright afternoon in late May, a massive delivery truck pulled up to the front entrance of the mansion.

Four workers carried ten large wooden crates into the grand ballroom.

Sophie stood near the entrance, dressed in a stunning emerald-green silk blouse and black tailored trousers, holding a digital tablet as she managed the delivery. Beside her stood Mason, who now acted as her personal security officer whenever Adrian was away at corporate headquarters.

"Where do you want these placed, Ms. Carter?" the delivery foreman asked respectfully.

"Along the east wall, please," Sophie replied with a warm smile. "We're setting up the catering displays for tomorrow evening's gala."

Tomorrow evening was the annual Vale Foundation Charity Gala—the most prestigious social event in Chicago, attended by senators, governors, international investors, and elite high-society families.

It was also the night Adrian had chosen to officially introduce Sophie to Chicago high society as his partner.

"Are you nervous?" Mason asked softly, walking over to her as the workers moved the crates.

Sophie let out a soft, nervous laugh, smoothing her blouse. "Terrified, Mason. These people are blue-bloods. They've known Adrian for years. When they see me... a former maid, a plus-size woman who didn't grow up in country clubs... they're going to judge him."

"Let them judge," a deep, smooth voice called out from the doorway.

Sophie turned around, her face lighting up instantly.

Adrian walked into the ballroom, dressed in an immaculate grey business suit, having just returned from his downtown office. He walked straight over to Sophie, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her soft body tight against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"If anyone offers you anything less than total respect tomorrow night," Adrian whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek, "I will buy their company and fire their entire family by Monday morning."

Sophie chuckled, turning around in his arms, resting her hands on his chest. "You can't buy everyone in Chicago, Adrian."

"Watch me," he grinned, dipping his head to give her a slow, sweet kiss that made her toes curl in her flats.

Mason discreetly cleared his throat and walked out of the room, leaving them in private.

"I spoke with your sister's doctor today," Adrian said softly, pulling a document from his coat pocket. "The experimental therapy at Johns Hopkins has been approved. All her medical expenses have been paid in full for the next five years."

Sophie gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes. "Adrian... oh my god. You didn't have to do that!"

"She is my family now, Sophie," Adrian said gently, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "Everything I have belongs to you. Your sister will get the best care in the world, and you will never have to worry about money ever again."

Sophie threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder, holding him with all her strength. "I love you so much," she cried softly.

"I know," Adrian smiled, holding her tight. "Now come upstairs. The dress designer from Paris arrived twenty minutes ago, and she says your gown requires a final fitting."
