Chapter 5 - The Fortress

By ten o'clock that evening, the Vale estate had been converted into an armed fortress.

Searchlights swept the perimeter walls; tactical team officers in full armor patrolled the long gravel driveways; state police cruisers lined the outer road. The public news outlets were reporting a "major vehicular accident involving a prominent businessman," but inside the mansion, everyone knew the truth.

A war had officially begun.

Inside the master suite on the top floor—a sanctuary where no staff member had ever been permitted to enter—Sophie sat on a soft velvet sofa near a roaring fireplace.

She was wrapped in a thick, dark cashmere robe that belonged to Adrian, a hot mug of chamomile tea resting in her lap. Her wet hair had dried into soft curls; a small adhesive bandage covered the tiny cut on her neck where the knife had touched her.

The door to the private bathroom opened, and Adrian stepped out.

He had showered and changed into a clean black dress shirt and dark trousers, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. A white bandage was wrapped securely around his right forearm where flying glass had cut him during the crash.

Sophie looked up as he approached. "How is your arm?"

"It's nothing," Adrian said softly, setting his gold watch on the mantelpiece before coming to sit on the sofa beside her.

The distance between them was less than six inches. The heat from his body radiated against her skin, comforting and immense.

"I'm sorry," Sophie whispered, looking down at her tea.

Adrian frowned slightly. "Why are you apologizing?"

"Because if I hadn't been in that car, you wouldn't have had to hold your fire," she said, her voice trembling. "That man used me against you. I made you vulnerable."

Adrian sat quietly for a long moment, watching the orange firelight dance across her face.

"You didn't make me vulnerable, Sophie," he said, reaching out to gently take the heavy mug from her hands, setting it on the coffee table. He turned back, taking both of her soft, trembling hands into his large, calloused palms. "You made me realize what I have been missing my entire life."

Sophie’s heart did a strange, violent leap in her chest. "Mr. Vale..."

"Adrian," he corrected her softly. "When that man put a knife to your neck... my heart stopped. I have faced rival gangs, federal investigations, assassins, and betrayal. I have never felt fear in my entire life, Sophie. Not until today."

He lifted her hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently, his warm breath sending shiver after shiver down her spine.

"My father taught me that power comes from having nothing to lose," Adrian whispered, his grey eyes locked onto hers with unbearable tenderness. "He told me that love was a weakness that enemies would exploit. For twenty years, I believed him. I built these walls, I built this company, I lived in total darkness."

He leaned closer, his forehead coming to rest gently against hers.

"Then you walked into my kitchen with blood on your lip," Adrian confessed. "And I realized I would burn this entire city to ash just to keep you safe."

Sophie felt tears welling in her eyes—not tears of fear or sadness, but of a profound, overwhelming joy that threatened to burst her chest open. All her life, she had been told she was too much: too big, too loud, too quiet, too ordinary. No one had ever looked at her and seen a treasure worth fighting for.

"Adrian," she breathed, her hands sliding up his muscular chest, her fingers weaving into his dark, damp hair. "I don't want you to burn the city. I just want you to come back to me."

Adrian let out a low, rough sound from the back of his throat. He closed the tiny distance remaining between them, pressing his lips firmly against hers.

The kiss was deep, possessive, and filled with a raw, desperate passion that swept away every remaining defense Sophie possessed. She melted against him, her body molding perfectly to his broad frame, her mouth opening to his as his powerful arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her onto his lap.

He kissed her as if she were oxygen, as if he had been drowning for thirty-eight years and had finally broken the surface of the water. His hands cupped her face, his thumbs gently smoothing her cheeks, worshipping every inch of her soft skin.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were gasping for air.

Adrian held her tightly against his chest, his heart hammering in perfect sync with hers.

"Stay here tonight," he whispered into her hair. "In my bed. Under my protection."

Sophie buried her face in his neck, inhaling the crisp scent of cedar, rain, and expensive cologne. "I'm not going anywhere."

A firm knock sounded at the heavy oak master door.

Mason’s voice came from the hallway. "Adrian. The captains are assembled at the river docks. It’s midnight."

Adrian’s grip on Sophie tightened for a fraction of a second before he gently released her, standing up. The loving, tender man who had just kissed her vanished back behind the formidable, lethal armor of Chicago’s underworld sovereign.

He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a fresh shoulder holster, slipping his weapon into place, and putting on a heavy black leather trench coat.

He walked over to where Sophie sat, bending down to kiss her forehead gently.

"Lock this door behind me," Adrian instructed her, his voice absolute. "Do not open it for anyone except Mason or myself."

"Adrian," Sophie called out as he reached the door.

He turned back.

"Be careful," she said softly.

Adrian offered her a cold, lethal smile that made her heart race. "Victor Moretti made the mistake of touching my world. By sunrise, he won't have one left."
