Chapter 3 - The New Uniform

At eight o'clock the following morning, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the private rear entrance of the West Wing.

Sophie stood in the grand foyer of her suite, staring at her reflection in the full-length gilded mirror. She felt entirely like an imposter.

Two stylists had arrived at her room at seven AM, sent directly by Adrian. They had styled her dark hair into soft, elegant waves that framed her face, applied subtle makeup that disguised the bruise on her cheek, and fitted her with a custom dark-navy wool dress designed by a high-end French tailor.

The dress was exquisite. It did not attempt to hide her plus-size figure under layers of shapeless, grey fabric like her old maid's uniform. Instead, it hugged her waist comfortably, flared elegantly at the hips, and featured a modest V-neck that highlighted her soft skin. With her new rose-gold glasses sitting delicately on her nose, she didn't look like a domestic servant. She looked like an executive.

Her hand trembled as she reached for her leather handbag.

"You look stunning, Ms. Carter," her stylist said warmly, packing away her brushes. "Mr. Vale is waiting for you downstairs."

Sophie took a deep breath, trying to calm the wild fluttering in her stomach. "Thank you," she whispered.

She walked out of the suite and down the grand marble staircase. Every staff member she passed immediately froze, bowing their heads respectfully as she walked by. The same housekeepers who had giggled at her in the cafeteria three days ago now pressed themselves against the walls, terrified to even make eye contact.

It made Sophie uncomfortable, but she kept her head held high, remembering Adrian’s command in the ballroom.

When she stepped out onto the gravel driveway, Adrian was standing beside the open rear door of the Mercedes.

He was dressed in a flawless pinstripe charcoal suit, his dark hair combed back, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire prince of Chicago. But as his eyes locked onto Sophie emerging from the doorway, his confident posture momentarily stiffened.

His grey eyes traveled slowly from her styled hair down to the custom navy dress, resting on her flushed, beautiful face. For two full seconds, the most feared man in Chicago appeared completely speechless.

Sophie blushed, lowering her eyes awkwardly. "Is... is it too much, Mr. Vale? I can go back up and change into something simpler—"

"No," Adrian cut her off, his voice deeper and huskier than usual. He stepped forward, offering her his gloved hand. "You look absolute magnificent, Sophie."

Sophie felt a jolt of electricity shoot up her arm as her fingers touched his warm palm. She allowed him to guide her into the plush leather interior of the vehicle before he climbed in beside her, closing the door.

The car smoothly accelerated down the long, tree-lined driveway toward the estate's outer gates.

"Where are we going?" Sophie asked, nervously smoothing the fabric of her dress.

"To Vale International Headquarters in downtown Chicago," Adrian replied, pulling a thick leather folder from his briefcase and setting it on the small table between them. "If you are to be my personal assistant, you need to understand the business."

Sophie looked at the folder, then up at his sharp profile. "Mr. Vale... why are you doing this? I know you said it was because Evelyn abused her power, but... giving me a suite, buying me clothes, making me your assistant... people are talking. They think—"

"I don't care what they think," Adrian said, turning his head to stare directly into her eyes. "Do you care what they think?"

Sophie swallowed hard. "I've spent my whole life caring what people think. When you're my size, people look at you and decide who you are before you even open your mouth. They think you're lazy, or stupid, or that you have no self-respect. Evelyn knew that. That's why she picked me."

Adrian’s expression hardened, a dark storm brewing in his eyes. "Evelyn picked you because she was a coward who mistook your kindness for weakness. But she made a fatal error."

"What error?"

"She made me look closely at you," Adrian said softly, leaning an inch closer to her. "I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who smile at my face and plot behind my back. Politicians, executives, criminals, family members—they all want something from me. But for three years, I watched you clean this house."

Sophie held her breath, her heart pounding.

"I watched you bake a cake for the dishwasher on his birthday when no one else remembered," Adrian continued, his voice barely louder than a whisper. "I watched you repair a torn tapestry in the library on your own time because you knew my mother loved it. You carry a quiet grace, Sophie Carter. A purity that this dark city hasn't managed to ruin."

He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline, just below her healing bruise.

"I didn't elevate you to spite Evelyn," Adrian confessed, his gaze burning into hers. "I elevated you because I want you beside me."

Sophie’s breath hitched. The air inside the luxury vehicle felt suddenly charged with intense, undeniable heat. She had expected pity; she had expected corporate damage control. She had never, in her wilder dreams, expected Adrian Vale to look at her as though she were the only woman in the world.

Before she could speak, the Mercedes suddenly swerved violently to the left, tires screeching against the asphalt!

CRASH!

A heavy black pickup truck smashed directly into the front passenger side of the Mercedes, forcing the luxury sedan off the road and crashing hard into the concrete barrier of the highway overpass!

Sophie screamed as she was thrown violently across the seat!

Before she could hit the door, Adrian’s powerful arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her tightly against his chest, shielding her head with his body as glass shattered and the world spun out of control!
