Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after Emma was discharged from the hospital, the atmosphere at Davis Strategic Consulting had transformed completely. Emma was back in school, vibrant and healthy, while Sarah worked with an extraordinary level of focus and grace. She was no longer just managing Marcus’s calendar; she was streamlining client intakes, managing cross-departmental communications, and keeping the entire executive floor operating like a clockwork machine.
The staff adored her. Lily, who often came to the office after school, spent her afternoons sitting at Sarah’s desk, drawing pictures with Emma while Marcus finished his late-day strategy calls.
However, peace in the business world is rarely left unprovoked.
On a cold Thursday morning, Sarah was sorting through the firm's incoming executive mail when her hands froze. In the center of the stack sat a heavy, gold-embossed envelope addressed directly to Marcus.
The return address read: Cole Global Holdings — Office of the Chief Executive Officer.
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. Her pulse spiked as memories of Richard Cole’s predatory smile, his quiet threats, and the coordinated blacklisting that had driven her and Emma into a homeless shelter flooded back with terrifying vividness.
Before she could process her anxiety, the heavy glass doors of the elevator chimed open.
A tall man in a tailored six-thousand-dollar Italian suit stepped onto the floor. His silvering hair was combed back with sleek precision, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the marble tile. Behind him stood a burly man carrying a thick leather briefcase—a corporate attorney.
It was Richard Cole.
Sarah stood up instinctively behind her desk, her knuckles turning white as she pressed them against the mahogany surface. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Richard stopped in his tracks, his eyes locking onto Sarah. For a brief second, shock registered on his face, quickly replaced by a sharp, condescending smirk.
"Well, well, well," Richard drawled, stepping closer to her desk, ignoring the receptionist who was trying to ask for his credentials. "Sarah Mitchell. I wondered where you had crawled off to after your little disaster at the shelter."
Sarah forced her voice to remain steady, though her hands were trembling beneath the desk line. "You are not permitted on this floor without an appointment, Mr. Cole."
Richard chuckled, a low, arrogant sound. "Always so formal, Sarah. I see you managed to land yourself another administrative desk. Tell me... did you use the same sob story on Davis that you tried to use on me? Or did you finally learn how to properly express your gratitude to your employers?"
The door to Marcus’s private office opened instantly.
Marcus stepped into the lobby, holding a file. He had overheard the tone of Richard’s voice. His sharp eyes moved from Richard’s arrogant posture to Sarah’s pale face, taking in the situation in less than a second.
"Is there a reason you are harassing my executive assistant in my lobby, Mr. Cole?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register.
Richard turned around, smoothing his silk tie, attempting to maintain his dominant posture. "Ah, Marcus Davis. I came to discuss the regional logistics contract for the Municipal Port Authority project. My firm is bidding against yours."
"I am aware of the bidding process," Marcus said, stepping between Richard and Sarah’s desk, effectively shielding her from Richard’s view. "However, my lobby is private property. And your presence here is uninvited."
Richard’s eyes narrowed. He gestured toward Sarah. "I see you've hired my former employee. I feel obligated as a fellow CEO to warn you, Davis. She’s unstable. She walked out on my firm, made outrageous accusations against my management team, and tried to ruin my reputation when I held her accountable for poor performance. If I were you, I'd check your petty cash drawer."
Sarah flinched, pulling her lips into a tight line, waiting for the inevitable moment when a powerful businessman supported another powerful businessman.
Instead, Marcus stepped right up into Richard’s personal space. Marcus was half an inch taller, his shoulders broad, his eyes filled with a terrifying, icy intensity.
"Sarah Mitchell is the most honest, competent, and brilliant administrative professional this firm has ever employed," Marcus said loudly enough for the entire office staff to hear. "And if you utter another defamatory sentence about her in my presence, or within fifty feet of my building, I will not only execute an immediate civil lawsuit for slander, but I will personally see to it that the Port Authority board receives a full ethics report regarding your past corporate practices."
Richard’s face flushed dark red. "Are you threatening me, Davis?"
"I don't make threats, Cole," Marcus said softly, his voice cutting like steel. "I execute strategy. Get off my floor. Now."
Richard stared at Marcus, realizing that Marcus was not a man who could be intimidated by wealth, titles, or corporate posturing. He adjusted his coat jacket, turned on his heel, and walked briskly back into the waiting elevator, his attorney hurrying behind him.
The heavy glass doors slid shut.
The floor was completely silent. Sarah stood frozen behind her desk, tears welling in her eyes, looking at Marcus’s back.
Marcus turned around to face her. His intense demeanor vanished instantly, replaced by genuine concern.
"Are you all right, Sarah?" he asked softly.
Sarah looked at him, wiping a tear before it could fall. "He’s going to try to destroy you, Marcus. Richard Cole doesn't lose, and he doesn't forgive people who stand up to him. He has millions of dollars and connections across the entire state."

Marcus walked over to her desk, pulled a tissue from the box, and handed it to her.
"Let him try," Marcus said calmly. "He built his empire on fear and extortion. I built mine on work and integrity. Let’s see which one stands when the wind blows."
