Chapter 7 - The New Home

Two months later.

The morning sun filtered brightly through the expansive glass windows of a beautiful four-bedroom craftsman home nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street near the park. The yard was green and spacious, featuring a custom-built wooden swingset, a flower garden, and a wide front porch with a swinging bench.

Boxes labeled EMMA’S ROOM and LILY’S ROOM were stacked neatly in the wide hallway.

Sarah stood in the center of the spacious living room, wearing comfortable jeans and an oversized sweater, holding a coffee mug. She looked around at the warm hardwood floors, the stone fireplace, and the bright sunlight filling every corner.

Marcus walked in behind her, carrying a heavy wooden dining chair. He set it down, walked up to her, and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

"What do you think?" Marcus whispered into her ear.

Sarah leaned back against his chest, letting out a deep, contented sigh. "It’s perfect, Marcus. It doesn't feel like a house. It feels like home."

"It is our home," Marcus said softly, turning her around in his arms so he could look into her eyes. "I signed the final closing papers this morning. The title is registered under both of our names."

Sarah’s eyes widened slightly. "Marcus... both of our names? But you put down the entire down payment!"

Marcus gently placed his finger over her lips.

"Sarah," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "When I was twenty-six, I slept in a rusty sedan holding baby Lily, wondering if we would ever have a real roof over our heads again. You spent months in a shelter, protecting Emma with everything you had. We both know what it feels like to have no ground beneath our feet."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a shiny set of brass keys, placing them into her palm and folding her fingers over them.

"This house isn't mine," Marcus promised, his dark eyes shining with absolute devotion. "It’s ours. A place where our daughters will grow up knowing they are safe, loved, and protected forever."

Tears of pure happiness spilled over Sarah’s cheeks. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate kiss.

From the hallway, the sound of fast, pitter-patter footsteps echoed.

Lily and Emma burst into the living room, wearing matching painted aprons, their hands covered in bright pink and turquoise washable paint.

"Mommy! Marcus! Look!" Emma yelled happily, holding up her hands. "We picked out the wall colors for our shared playroom!"

"Can we paint handprints on the accent wall?!" Lily asked eagerly, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Like a family tree?!"

Sarah wiped her tears, laughing as she knelt down to wrap her arms around both little girls. "Yes, sweethearts! Absolutely! As many handprints as you want!"

Emma wrapped her arms around Sarah’s neck, then reached out her small hand to grab Marcus’s sleeve, pulling him into the hug.

"I love our new house, Mommy," Emma whispered happily, pressing her cheek against Sarah’s. "And I love Marcus."

Marcus closed his eyes, feeling a profound surge of warmth fill his chest. He pulled Sarah, Lily, and Emma tightly into his arms, holding the family he had dreamed of for ten long years.
