Chapter 5 - The Committee Showdown

The Grand Ballroom of the City Convention Center was filled with news cameras, public officials, corporate attorneys, and industry leaders. The Municipal Port Authority Board sat behind a long curved mahogany dais at the front of the room, led by Chairman Arthur Vance—a no-nonsense former federal magistrate known for absolute intolerance of corporate corruption.
Marcus and Sarah sat at the primary applicant table on the left, dressed in sharp business attire. Sarah held the locked leather briefcase on her lap.
Across the aisle sat Richard Cole, surrounded by five high-powered corporate lawyers. Richard wore a confident, triumphant smirk, casually adjusting his gold cuff links. He believed his technical team had successfully planted altered, forged accounting records into the public repository the previous afternoon.
"Item 4 on the agenda," Chairman Vance announced, his heavy voice echoing through the microphone. "Final bidding reviews for the Forty-Million-Dollar Municipal Port Logistics Project. We will hear final five-minute closing statements from Cole Global Holdings, followed by Davis Strategic Consulting."
Richard Cole stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket as he walked to the central podium. He adjusted his glasses and looked at the board members.
"Thank you, Chairman Vance, members of the board," Richard began, his voice dripping with practiced charm. "Cole Global Holdings has submitted a bid that is three percent lower than our competitor. However, before this board votes, I feel a grave public duty to bring a crucial matter of corporate integrity to your immediate attention."
The gallery began to whisper. Sarah narrowed her eyes, keeping her composure.
Richard pulled a glossy document from his folder. "Last evening, my legal team conducted a standard public audit check on the financial disclosures submitted by Davis Strategic Consulting. Regrettably, we discovered severe accounting discrepancies—unreported offshore liabilities and manipulated revenue figures indicating that Davis Strategic is on the verge of insolvency."
The room erupted into loud gasps. Journalists began snapping photos rapidly.
Richard turned toward Marcus, his smile darkening with predatory delight. "It appears Mr. Davis’s firm has been cooking its books to deceive this municipality. I have submitted these certified digital files to the board’s portal just an hour ago."
Chairman Vance frowned deeply, looking down at his digital tablet. "Mr. Davis, these are serious allegations. How do you respond?"
Marcus stood up calmly. He did not look worried. He did not look angry. He walked to the podium beside Richard, stepping right up to the microphone.
"Thank you, Chairman Vance," Marcus said, his voice deep and clear. "The files Mr. Cole just mentioned are indeed manipulated. But they were not created by my firm."
Richard sneered softly. "Desperate excuses, Davis."
"Yesterday at 5:30 p.m.," Marcus continued smoothly, "an unauthorized external IP address attempted to breach our secure servers to steal our proprietary financial data. Recognizing the cyber-attack, my executive assistant, Ms. Sarah Mitchell, deployed an encrypted decoy file embedded with a digital tracking watermark."
Marcus signaled to Sarah.
Sarah stood up gracefully, picked up her laptop, and connected it to the main projector screens framing the stage.
High-resolution digital logs lit up the giant screens across the ballroom.
"As you can see on the screen," Marcus explained, pointing to the code, "the digital signature of the manipulated files Mr. Cole just handed to this board contains the exact forensic watermark from our decoy trap. Furthermore, the IP address that accessed, altered, and uploaded those fake documents traces directly to a private server inside Mr. Cole’s personal residence."
Richard’s face went from smug confidence to ash-gray in a fraction of a second. His hands began to tremble on the podium. "This... this is a fabrication! A technical glitch!"
"It is corporate espionage, wire fraud, and evidence tampering, Mr. Cole," Marcus said loudly.
Sarah stepped up to the dais, unlocked the heavy leather briefcase with her key, and handed three pristine, wax-sealed binders directly to Chairman Vance.
"These are the original, certified financial audits performed by the State Treasury Department," Sarah said clearly into the microphone. "Proving that Davis Strategic Consulting operates with zero debt, full transparency, and perfect fiscal health."
Chairman Vance opened the binder, examined the official state seals, and then looked down at Richard Cole with an expression of pure, thunderous fury.
"Mr. Cole," Chairman Vance said, his voice like cracking ice. "You have attempted to submit forged documents to a municipal board during an official government proceeding."
"Chairman, please! I was misled by my IT staff!" Richard stammered, stepping back, looking frantically toward his five lawyers, who were already packing their bags to distance themselves from him.
"Security," Chairman Vance commanded, striking his heavy wood gavel. "Escort Mr. Cole from this building immediately. Furthermore, I am referring these digital logs and Mr. Cole’s submissions to the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division for immediate criminal indictment."
Two uniformed officers stepped forward, grabbing Richard’s arms, pulling him away from the podium.
As Richard was led away in shame through the roaring crowd of reporters, he passed Sarah.
Sarah stood tall, her chin raised, looking at him with absolute calm. The man who had terrorized her, starved her, and tried to destroy her life was now being dragged away to face federal prison.
Chairman Vance struck his gavel once more. "By unanimous decision of the board, the Forty-Million-Dollar Municipal Port Logistics Contract is officially awarded to Davis Strategic Consulting!"

The ballroom erupted into cheers and applause.
Marcus turned to Sarah, pulled her into his arms, and lifted her off her feet, swinging her around as the crowd cheered for their historic victory.
