Chapter 8 - The Proposal at the Park

Spring arrived in full bloom six months later. The trees in Riverside Park were blanketed in vibrant pink cherry blossoms, and a gentle, warm breeze ruffled the surface of the quiet river.
It was the exact same park where, eight months earlier, Marcus had sat on a cold wooden bench fifteen feet away from Sarah, keeping his distance, respecting her fear, and offering her a chance to rebuild her life.
Today, the park was filled with sunshine and laughter.
Lily and Emma were soaring high on the swings, shouting with joy as George Bennett pushed them gently, taking great care to make sure they didn't go "too high."
Sarah sat on the wooden bench wearing a soft yellow sundress. Her hair blew gently in the spring wind, her skin radiant, her eyes glowing with deep peace.
Marcus walked over from the nearby coffee kiosk holding two iced lattes. He handed one to Sarah and sat down beside her—not fifteen feet away, but right beside her, their shoulders touching.
"Thank you," Sarah said, taking a sip and looking out at the children playing.
"Do you remember the first time we sat here?" Marcus asked softly, looking at the bench across the path.
Sarah smiled, a beautiful, nostalgic curve of her lips. "I was so angry at you. I thought you were just another man trying to make me feel small. I told you I couldn't accept help from men."
"And I told you that trust is built through actions, not words," Marcus reminded her softly.
Sarah turned to face him, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You proved every single word, Marcus. Every single day."
Marcus set his coffee cup down on the bench. He took a deep breath, his heart beating with a nervous excitement he hadn't felt since he was a young man.
He stood up from the bench, stepped in front of her, and slowly sank down onto one knee on the grass.
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth as tears instantly welled in her eyes.
From the swings across the path, Lily and Emma stopped swinging. George Bennett stood beside them, a massive, proud smile spreading across his face.
Marcus reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal a breathtaking, ethically sourced solitaire diamond ring resting on a band of polished platinum.
"Sarah," Marcus said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with boundless love. "Eight months ago, I saw a brave, brilliant mother standing in a restaurant, protecting her child with everything she had. I fell in love with your courage before I even knew your story."
Sarah wept quietly, nodding her head as he spoke.
"You brought warmth, grace, and true love into my life and into Lily’s heart," Marcus continued, his eyes locked onto hers. "You showed me that partnership isn't about one person saving another—it's about two people walking side-by-side through whatever life brings."
He took her trembling hand into his.
"Sarah Mitchell... will you do me the absolute honor of marrying me, and letting me love you and Emma for the rest of my life?"
Sarah didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes!" she sobbed happily, slipping off the bench and kneeling down onto the grass right in front of him. "Yes, Marcus! A thousand times, yes!"
Marcus slid the diamond ring onto her finger, framing her face with his hands, and pulled her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss under the falling cherry blossom petals.

"SHE SAID YES!" Lily and Emma screamed from across the park, sprinting across the grass with their arms wide open.
The two little girls tackled Marcus and Sarah onto the soft grass, giggling and cheering as George Bennett walked over, clapping his hands proudly, tears of joy streaming down his weathered cheeks.
