Chapter 3 - The Sabotage

The Municipal Port Authority contract was the largest civic infrastructure project in the state’s history—a forty-million-dollar logistics management deal that would secure the winning firm's reputation for the next decade. Davis Strategic Consulting was the frontrunner due to Marcus’s flawless operational design, while Cole Global Holdings was using political lobbying and aggressive price-cutting to steal the bid.

Two weeks after the lobby confrontation, the final presentation to the Municipal Port Committee was set for Friday morning.

On Wednesday afternoon, Sarah was finalizing the financial audit appendix for the pitch deck—a master document containing three years of certified corporate ledgers proving Davis Strategic’s fiscal health.

At 5:30 p.m., as the rest of the office staff was leaving, Sarah received a phone call on her desk line from an internal extension.

"Sarah? It’s David from IT," the voice said nervously. "We're running a mandatory server security patch on Mr. Davis’s private terminal before the big presentation on Friday. Could you upload the finalized financial appendix to the shared cloud folder 'Project_Port_Secure' so we can lock the encryption keys?"

Sarah paused. "David? Your voice sounds strange."

"I have a terrible cold," the caller rasped. "Look, we need it done in ten minutes, or the server goes dark until Monday morning."

Sarah’s instincts, honed by years of hyper-vigilance, flared up. She kept her voice smooth. "Of course. I’m uploading it right now."

She hung up the phone. Instantly, she opened her terminal and ran an internal tracer on the extension.

The call hadn't come from the IT department on the 4th floor. It had been routed through an external virtual proxy server originating from an outside IP address.

Someone was attempting to steal Davis Strategic Consulting’s proprietary financial data to sabotage or leak the pitch before Friday’s committee meeting.

Sarah did not panic. She immediately picked up her desk phone and dialed Marcus’s cell. He was across town in a meeting with the primary port engineers.

"Marcus," Sarah said, her tone sharp and precise. "Someone just tried to social-engineer access to our Port Authority financial appendix."

"Did they get it?" Marcus asked, his voice tensing over the line.

"No," Sarah said. "I uploaded a secondary, decoy file containing watermarked, dummy data embedded with a tracking bug. If they download or open that file, our security software will log their exact physical IP address and device signature."

There was a brief pause on the line. Then Marcus let out a low, proud laugh. "Sarah, you are an absolute genius. Who fell for the trap?"

"I’m looking at the live trace right now," Sarah said, watching her screen as the digital tracking software pinged an address downtown. "The decoy file was opened three minutes ago inside an IP network registered to... Cole Global Holdings Legal Division."

"They're getting desperate," Marcus said, his tone turning dark. "They know their technical proposal is inferior, so Richard is trying to fabricate a corporate accounting scandal against us before the board vote."

"What do we do?" Sarah asked. "If Richard presents fake manipulated ledgers to the committee on Friday, even a temporary investigation could delay the contract long enough for Cole Global to win by default."

"We don't just defend, Sarah," Marcus said calmly. "We set a trap. Print out the real certified ledgers, seal them in a secure physical vault bag, and bring them home with you tonight. Don't leave them in the office. On Friday morning, we present the real files directly to the state ethics board right in front of the entire committee."

"I’ll protect the files with my life," Sarah said firmly.

"I know you will," Marcus replied softly. "Thank you, Sarah. Get home safe to Emma. I’ll see you tomorrow."

Sarah printed the classified ledgers, placed them inside a heavy, lockable leather briefcase, and secured the key inside her locket necklace.

As she stepped out of the office building into the crisp evening air, she felt a strange, thrilling sensation in her chest. For years, she had been a victim—running, hiding, lying low, allowing men like Richard Cole to dictate her destiny.

Now, she was standing on the front lines of a multi-million-dollar battle, fighting alongside a man who trusted her intelligence, respected her courage, and treated her as a true equal.

She pulled her coat tightly around her shoulders, gripped the handle of the leather briefcase, and stepped into the city night.
