Chapter 6 - The Fall of Cole Global

The fallout from the Port Authority scandal was swift, merciless, and absolute. Within forty-eight hours of the committee meeting, the State Attorney General formally issued an indictment against Richard Cole, charging him with Federal Wire Fraud, Corporate Espionage, Evidence Tampering, and Extortion.
As news of the criminal charges broke across every major financial network, Cole Global Holdings collapsed like a house of cards. Major investors pulled their funding overnight, corporate clients terminated their contracts, and the company's stock plummeted to zero.
On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, three weeks after the hearing, Sarah sat at her desk at Davis Strategic Consulting, reviewing an official legal notification sent by the State Receiver’s Office.
Marcus walked out of his office holding two cups of fresh coffee. He set one on her desk and leaned against the wood.
"What are you reading?" he asked with a gentle smile.
"It’s the final liquidation report for Cole Global Holdings," Sarah said, looking up from the paper. "The state court has seized all of Richard’s personal and corporate assets to pay restitution to his victims."
"And?" Marcus asked softly.
"And," Sarah said, her voice filled with quiet awe, "the state ethics committee reviewed the records of how Richard systematically blacklisted former employees. They found six other women who had been harassed, silenced, and driven out of the industry by him."
"Justice has a way of catching up, Sarah," Marcus said. "Even when it takes years."
Sarah looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling city below. The fear that had lived inside her chest for two years was completely gone, replaced by an empowering sense of purpose.
"The state receiver is setting up a victim compensation fund using Richard's liquidated assets," Sarah revealed. "I’ve been asked to sit on the advisory board to help distribute grants to women who were driven into financial hardship by corporate abuse."
Marcus reached out, taking her hand gently in his. "There is no one better suited for that role in the entire state. You turned your pain into a shield for other people."
Sarah looked at him, her eyes filled with boundless love. "I couldn't have done any of it without you, Marcus. You gave me the space to remember who I was."
"No, Sarah," Marcus corrected her softly, kissing the back of her hand. "You did the work yourself. I just held the door open."
Suddenly, the elevator doors chimed open.
Lily and Emma came running onto the floor, holding hands, wearing matching yellow sweaters. Behind them walked George Bennett—the older, silver-haired man who had given Marcus a chance ten years earlier when he was sleeping in his sedan.
"Daddy! Look!" Lily shouted, running up to Marcus. "Uncle George took us to get ice cream!"
George Bennett walked over, a warm, wise smile on his weathered face. He looked at Marcus, then turned his gaze to Sarah, taking in the clear love and deep connection between them.
"Marcus," George said, his deep voice filled with pride. "You've built quite an empire here, son."
"I learned from the best, George," Marcus replied, giving the older man a tight, respectful embrace. "George, I want you to officially meet Sarah Mitchell... the woman who makes this entire place run."
George stepped forward, taking Sarah’s hand in both of his, looking into her eyes with deep kindness. "I’ve heard so much about you, Sarah. Marcus told me how you handled the Port Authority pitch. You have remarkable courage."
"Thank you, Mr. Bennett," Sarah said softly. "Marcus told me what you did for him and Lily years ago. You saved their lives."

George shook his head gently, looking at the two little girls giggled as they showed each other their ice cream cones.
"I didn't save anyone, my dear," George whispered warmly. "I just saw a good man standing in a hard storm, and I gave him a coat. And I am so blessed to see that he grew up to share that coat with you."
