Chapter 2 - THE FORTRESS OF SILENCE

The Marchetti estate sat high on the wooded bluffs overlooking the river, a massive stone mansion protected by high iron gates, surveillance cameras, and armed guards.
During the thirty-minute drive in the back of Damian’s bulletproof SUV, Maya had sat with Mateo and Leo on her lap while Sienna rested across her chest. The moment the vehicle had moved, the three toddlers had crawled onto her as if drawn by a magnetic force, burying their dark curly heads against her shoulders, falling into a deep, peaceful sleep for the first time in months.
Damian sat across from them, his dark eyes observing the scene in silence. He watched the way Maya instinctively stroked Mateo’s back, the way her breathing synchronized with Sienna’s, and how the hollow, haunted look in her hazel eyes was slowly being replaced by a fierce, maternal warmth.
When the SUV stopped outside the grand entrance of the mansion, Damian opened the door himself.
"Let me take one," Damian offered gently, reaching for Mateo.
"No," Maya said immediately, her voice sharp, protective, and trembling. She clutched all three toddlers closer to her chest. "Don't take them from me. Please... don't ever take them again."
Damian paused, staring at her fiercely guarded stance. Instead of taking offense, a subtle look of profound respect crossed his face.
"I won't," Damian promised. "Follow me."
Inside the grand foyer, staff members stood in stunned shock as their formidable master walked in, followed by a drenched, exhausted woman in a stained waitress uniform holding all three of the famously inconsolable Marchetti toddlers—who were fast asleep and entirely peaceful.
Damian led Maya up the grand staircase into the master nursery suite—a warm, beautifully decorated wing filled with soft cribs, toys, and large windows overlooking the gardens.
Maya set the toddlers down onto a large, plush velvet play-mat. The moment her hands left them, Leo stirred, reaching out his small hand to grip Maya’s index finger in his sleep, refusing to let go.
Maya sank to her knees on the soft carpet, tears flowing freely down her cheeks as she pressed her forehead against Leo’s tiny hand.
"They're alive..." she sobbed softly, her body shaking. "My babies are alive..."
Damian walked over, standing beside her. He looked down at the woman who had suffered fourteen months of unspeakable nightmare, only to maintain a heart pure enough to love her stolen children instantly.
"Dr. Julian Vance," Damian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, dark register, "will answer for every tear you shed."
"Why?" Maya asked, looking up at Damian through her tears. "Why would anyone do this to me?"
"Because Falcone needed an heir to secure his alliance with my family," Damian revealed, his fists clenching at his sides. "Gina was infertile. They bought Vance, staged your babies' deaths, and transferred them to Gina's delivery room while you were unconscious."
Maya stood up slowly, ensuring Leo's tiny hand remained resting against her palm. "And what happens now? Falcone thinks these are his grandchildren."

Damian met her gaze with an unyielding, terrifying promise.
"Falcone is about to find out," Damian declared, "what happens when you steal from a Marchetti—and from a mother."
