Chapter 10 - The Architecture of Joy

One year later.
The early morning sun streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the newly built central conservatory at the Carmel estate.
The room smelled of fresh coffee, warm croissants, and blooming orange blossoms. Outside, the blue Pacific Ocean stretched out to the horizon, calm and shimmering under the clear sky.
Grace sat at a large wooden dining table, wearing a comfortable floral silk robe, reviewing a set of architectural plans for a new women's shelter and educational center in Chicago.
Beside her sat Elena, happily doing a crossword puzzle, while little Lucy—now home for summer break—was telling her about her university classes.
Footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor.
Dante walked into the conservatory, wearing a simple linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and dark trousers. Gone was the stoic, dangerous man who used to command boardrooms with fear; in his place stood a man whose face was filled with warm contentment and gentle strength.
He walked up behind Grace’s chair, leaning down to kiss the top of her head, then slid his arms around her shoulders, looking over her work.
"How are the blueprints looking?" Dante asked softly, resting his cheek against hers.
"Wonderful," Grace said, leaning back into his warmth. "The Chicago building will be ready by October. We'll be able to house fifty families before the winter sets in."
"Good," Dante murmured, kissing her cheek. "Whatever you need from the estate accounts, consider it approved."
"I don't need your approval, Signor Moretti," Grace teased, turning her head to give him a playful smirk. "I'm the Director, remember?"
Dante laughed—a rich, booming sound that made Elena look up from her puzzle with a warm, fond smile.
"So you are, Mrs. Moretti," Dante said softly, his eyes shining with profound affection as he used her new name. "So you are."
He stepped around her chair, reaching down to take her hand, pulling her gently up to her feet.
"Walk with me," Dante murmured.
They stepped out onto the wide stone terrace, the cool ocean breeze wrapping around them. The morning light caught the brilliant sapphire ring on Grace’s left hand, sending tiny flecks of blue light across the stone floor.
Dante pulled her close against his chest, wrapping his strong arms around her broad waist, holding her tight against his heart. They stood together at the edge of the cliff, looking out over the endless ocean.
"What are you thinking about?" Grace asked softly, resting her head against his shoulder.
Dante smiled, looking out at the sun rising higher into the sky, casting a brilliant trail of gold across the blue water.
"I was thinking about the afternoon you sat near the fireplace with my mother," Dante said softly, his deep voice full of quiet wonder. "When you told her that setting medication on fire was probably frowned upon because somebody would make you clean the hearth."
Grace chuckled, a soft, beautiful sound. "You heard that?"
"I heard everything," Dante whispered, kissing her temple. "I just wasn't smart enough yet to realize that the woman standing by that fireplace was going to be my entire world."
Grace turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who loved her completely, unconditionally, and without reserve.
"We built a good life, Dante," Grace whispered.
May you like
"No, my love," Dante replied, dipping his head to kiss her lips with sweet, endless devotion. "You built a good life. I'm just the luckiest man on earth because you let me share it with you."
Hand in hand, husband and wife stood together in the warm morning sun, looking forward to a lifetime of bright, beautiful, and endless tomorrows.
