Chapter 2 - The Lion in the Ruins

The grand gates of the Moretti estate stood open under the torrential downpour. Fire engines and emergency vehicles lined the long gravel driveway, their red and blue strobe lights painting the wet stone facade in harsh, erratic color.
The main salon was untouched by fire, though the heavy stench of smoke hung in the air.
Inside, Arthur Laurent—Vanessa’s father, a powerful real estate mogul with silver hair and a ruthless reputation—sat on one of the leather sofas with a glass of scotch in his hand. Vanessa stood near the fireplace, wearing a pristine dark coat, speaking urgently to two senior corporate lawyers holding leather briefcases.
When the heavy front doors slammed open, every person in the room froze.
Dante stepped into the hall. He had not changed his clothes. His jacket was stained with soot, his right cuff was singed, and his hands were heavily wrapped in medical gauze. Behind him stepped four of his most formidable security officers, their faces unreadable.
Vanessa immediately put on an expression of breathless relief and moved toward him. "Dante! Oh thank God you're back. How is your mother? Is that awful maid—"
Dante didn't even look at her. He walked past her as if she were made of thin air, stepping directly into the center of the room.
"Out," Dante said, looking at the two corporate lawyers.
Arthur Laurent set his glass down on the table with a sharp click. "Dante, be reasonable. These gentlemen are drafting the press response to protect both our families from public scandal. The maid’s actions—"
"I said get out," Dante repeated, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made both attorneys step back instinctively.
The lawyers looked at Arthur, then at the hard-faced men standing behind Dante, and rapidly gathered their files, exiting through the side doors without another word.
"Dante, what is the meaning of this?" Arthur demanded, standing up and smoothing his coat. "My daughter has been subjected to a horrifying ordeal tonight! An unstable servant set fire to your east wing—"
"Vanessa," Dante said, turning slowly to face his fiancée.
Vanessa blinked, taking a half-step back from the cold, lethal stillness in his eyes. "Dante... darling, you're in shock—"
"Where is the original emerald, Vanessa?"
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Vanessa’s face didn't break, but her throat moved as she swallowed hard. "What... what are you talking about? The maid stole the necklace. I found the empty box on her cart—"
"You placed the empty box on her cart," Dante said, stepping closer to her. "Because you knew Grace had seen you taking the original stones out of my mother's safe three days ago."
"That's a lie!" Vanessa gasped, looking to her father. "Dad, tell him!"
"Dante, this is outrageous," Arthur interjected, stepping between them. "You're accusing my daughter based on the word of a bitter servant who—"
Dante reached into his inner pocket with his unbandaged fingers and tossed a thick sheaf of printed financial records onto the marble coffee table.
"Your import firm, Laurent Global, filed for bankruptcy protection in Switzerland six weeks ago," Dante said, his eyes never leaving Vanessa’s pale face. "You needed twenty million dollars in clean liquidity to cover your margin calls before the audit next month. You couldn't ask me for a loan without exposing your family's insolvent balance sheet before the marriage contract was executed."
Arthur’s face drained of every drop of color.
"So you decided to systematically replace my family's heirloom jewelry with synthetic replicas," Dante continued softly. "And when my mother began writing down what she saw, you hired a crew to start a fire in the service wing to destroy the evidence—and eliminate the maid who protected her."
"That's absurd!" Vanessa shrieked, her perfect composure finally shattering into ugly desperation. "You have no proof! You're taking the word of a fat, pathetic maid over mine!"
Dante stepped directly into her personal space. The sheer, crushing pressure of his presence made her flinch.
"That 'pathetic maid' walked through fire to save my mother's life while you were standing out here calculating your insurance claim," Dante whispered, his words cutting through her like glass. "Grace Bennett has more dignity in her pinky finger than your entire family has in its ancestry."
He turned to Marco.
"Take Miss Laurent and her father off the property," Dante ordered. "The state police and the federal fraud division are waiting at the main gate with warrants for grand larceny, insurance fraud, and attempted murder."
Arthur Laurent gasped, lunging forward. "You can't do this, Moretti! The merger! Our family connections!"
"The merger is dead," Dante said without turning around. "And if either of you ever steps within ten miles of Grace Bennett or my mother again, I won't use the courts."
As Marco’s men seized Arthur and a screaming, hysterical Vanessa, dragging them toward the doors, Dante stood alone in the smoky room.

He looked at his reflection in the dark glass of the grand salon window—a man who had almost sacrificed his mother and a hero's life for the sake of empty pride.
He walked out into the rain, heading straight back to the hospital.
