Chapter 5 - The Gala of Truth

Three months later, the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco was illuminated by dozens of massive crystal chandeliers.
Over five hundred of the state's most prominent business leaders, philanthropists, and society figures gathered for the annual Maritime Children's Hospital Charity Gala.
At the center of the room stood Dante Moretti.
He wore a bespoke black tuxedo, looking every inch the powerful titan of industry. But unlike past events, where he had moved through rooms surrounded by bodyguards and political fixers, tonight he stood near the grand entrance, his eyes fixed entirely on the foyer doors.
A murmur rippled through the crowd as the doors opened.
Grace Bennett stepped into the ballroom.
She wore a custom-made sapphire-blue velvet gown that swept gracefully to the floor. The dress was designed to celebrate her broad, gorgeous curves, accentuating her waist and highlighting her glowing skin. Her dark hair was styled in soft, elegant waves falling over one shoulder, and around her neck rested a simple, elegant platinum chain with a single sapphire.
She carried herself with absolute, unshakeable poise—a woman who knew her worth, moving through the room without an ounce of apology.
Beside her walked Elena Moretti, looking radiant in a dark silver dress, holding Grace's arm with proud affection.
Dante didn't wait for them to reach the center of the room. He stepped away from a group of prominent city council members and walked directly across the polished floor toward Grace.
The room fell into an astonished hush.
Dante offered his arm to Grace, his eyes shining with an open, fierce admiration that left no doubt in anyone's mind where his heart lay.
"You are breathtaking," Dante whispered as she accepted his arm.
Grace felt a warm flush touch her cheeks, but her smile was confident and true. "Thank you, Dante."
A wealthy socialite who had been a close friend of Vanessa Laurent stepped into their path, offering a cold, condescending smile. "Dante... darling. How unusual to see you accompanied by... house staff. Is this a new charitable initiative?"
Before Grace could even speak, Dante stepped forward, his eyes turning to black ice as he looked down at the woman.
"This is Grace Bennett," Dante declared, his voice ringing clearly across the quiet circle of guests surrounding them. "She is the Vice Director of the Moretti Family Foundation, the woman who saved my mother's life, and the most extraordinary person I have ever had the honor of knowing."
He looked around the room, meeting the gaze of every wealthy figure watching them.
"If anyone in this room fails to show Miss Bennett the absolute respect she deserves," Dante added, his tone sending a clear, lethal warning through the crowd, "they will find themselves permanently excluded from every business entity and institution my family controls."
The socialite turned pale, offered a frantic nod, and melted back into the crowd.
Grace looked up at Dante, her hand resting over his forearm.
"You didn't have to do that," she murmured softly.
"Yes, I did," Dante replied, looking down at her with unbounded tenderness. "Because six months ago, I stayed silent in a room full of hypocrites. I will never be silent again."

Elena laughed softly beside them. "Now, if you two are finished intimidating high society, I believe there are lemon tarts near the buffet."
Grace laughed—a rich, beautiful sound that filled Dante’s heart with a joy he had never known existed.
