Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Trust

The private villa overlooking Lake Como was bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon.

Following the confrontation in Milan, Dante had cleared his schedule entirely, taking Grace to the quiet sanctuary of the Moretti family’s private retreat. The villa was surrounded by cascading terraced gardens, ancient olive trees, and the deep, peaceful blue of the lake.

That evening, a crisp autumn breeze blew off the water.

Grace stood on the master balcony, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. She wore a soft cream silk robe, her long hair falling over her shoulders. Though they had won the battle against Giancarlo, a quiet weight lingered in her mind.

She heard the soft footfalls behind her before she felt Dante’s warm presence. He wrapped a heavy cashmere blanket over her shoulders, stepping close to wrap his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You're quiet tonight, my love," Dante murmured, kissing the side of her neck. "Is it Lake Como, or are you still thinking about Milan?"

Grace set her teacup down on the stone railing and turned in his arms. She looked into his dark, expressive eyes—eyes that had once held only cold calculation, but now burned with absolute devotion.

"I was thinking about how quickly everything changed," Grace admitted softly. "A year ago, I was waking up at five in the morning to scrub marble floors in a mansion where people spoke about me as if I were invisible. Now, I stand in private boardrooms in Europe, and powerful men tremble when I speak."

Dante’s hands rested gently on her hips. "Because you were always powerful, Grace. The world was just too blind to see it."

"No, Dante," Grace said, looking down at his large, strong hands resting against her waist. "I had dignity. I had self-respect. But power... power requires a platform. You gave me that platform. But sometimes..." She hesitated, her throat tightening.

Dante’s expression softened instantly. He lifted her chin with his forefinger, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Tell me. Everything."

"Sometimes," Grace whispered, the vulnerability she usually kept hidden breaking through her calm demeanor, "a small part of me worries that I'm just a project to you. A way for you to wash the blood and guilt off your hands. What if you only love me because I saved your mother, and because saving me makes you feel like a good man?"

The air on the balcony went completely still.

Dante didn't pull away. He didn't get defensive. Instead, a look of profound, agonizing love filled his eyes—a depth of emotion that made Grace’s breath catch in her throat.

He took both of her hands, holding them against his chest, right over his beating heart.

"Grace," Dante said, his voice raw and trembling. "When I met you, I was a monster in a five-thousand-dollar suit. I thought the world was divided into people who ruled and people who served. I was arrogant, empty, and dead inside."

He squeezed her hands tightly against his ribs.

"You didn't just save my mother from that fire, Grace," he whispered, a tear escaping his eye and tracing a path down his cheek. "You saved my soul. I don't love you because of what you did for my family. I love you because when you look at me, you see the man I want to be. I love your brilliant mind. I love your strength. I love every single inch of your breathtaking body. I love the way you laugh when you think no one is watching."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers.

"If you took away the money, the foundation, the estates, and the name," Dante swore softly, "I would still crawl through glass just to carry your tray. You are not my project, Grace. You are my home."

May you like

Grace closed her eyes, letting his words wash over her like a warm tide, melting the last tiny splinter of doubt that had rested in her heart.

She raised her hands, framing his handsome face, and pulled him down into a passionate, breathless kiss—a kiss that tasted of sweet autumn air, deep forgiveness, and absolute trust.
