Chapter 2 - The Green Snake in the Mansion

The midnight air inside the Greystone mansion was thick with unspoken tension.

Adrien carried Zoe into the grand kitchen, setting her gently onto the polished marble counter. Grace stood nearby, her hands trembling as she poured warm milk into a small cup, her eyes flitting nervously between her boss and the tiny child sitting comfortably on his expensive suit jacket.

"Grace," Adrien said, resting his hand on the counter beside her. "How long has Lucian Vance been coming into my private quarters while I'm away?"

Grace blinked, her face going pale. "Mr. Vance? He... he inspects your rooms every Tuesday evening during the sweep. He told us it was standard security protocol. He said if anyone entered the upper hallway without his permission, they would be dismissed immediately."

"And he talked to Zoe?"

Grace looked down at her daughter, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Last month... I found Zoe hiding in the pantry. She was shaking. She said the man with the red watch told her that if she ever stepped into your hallway again, bad men would come and take Bear away. I thought... I thought she was just having nightmares, Mr. Romano. I had no idea..."

Adrien’s jaw tightened until the muscles worked beneath his skin. "He threatened a child to protect his bugs."

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a single number.

"Arthur," Adrien commanded flatly. "Assemble the Inner Circle at the lake house in thirty minutes. Do not notify Lucian. Disable his security access card to the primary armory as of right now."

On the other end of the line, Arthur Pendelton—Adrien’s veteran legal counselor and former head of intelligence—paused. "Adrien? You aren't supposed to be back from New York until Friday. Is something wrong?"

"The snake inside my house has a name, Arthur," Adrien replied cold and clear. "And we are going to tear his head off tonight."

He hung up the phone, turning back to Grace.

"Pack a bag for you and Zoe," Adrien ordered softly. "You are moving into the east wing guest suites tonight. My personal bodyguards will stand outside your door. You will be safe there."

Grace stared at him, bewildered. "Mr. Romano... I am just a housekeeper. We don't belong in the guest suites—"

"You belong wherever I say you belong, Grace," Adrien interrupted, his voice firm yet extraordinarily tender. He looked down at Zoe, who was happily munching on a cookie she had retrieved from her pajama pocket. "Your daughter gave me the truth when everyone else gave me lies. From this night forward, no one in this house touches a single hair on either of your heads."

Fifteen minutes later, Adrien stood in his private master suite. He slid his hand beneath the heavy mahogany bedframe. His fingers brushed against a tiny, flat disk—the military bug Zoe had drawn in her crayon picture.

Instead of destroying it, Adrien pulled a small leather notebook from his pocket. He leaned down toward the bug and spoke in a clear, deliberate voice.

"The New York deal is closed," Adrien said, faking a phone call to a non-existent associate. "I will be arriving at the South Chicago docks tomorrow night at midnight alone to inspect the unscheduled shipment of diamonds from Antwerp. Keep the guard light. I don't want the authorities taking notice."

He let the silence stretch for three seconds, then walked out of the room, leaving the bug active.

Downstairs in the security control room, Lucian Vance sat before twelve glowing monitors. He had his silver Rolex with the red ruby dial resting on the console. A tiny earbud in his right ear was receiving the live feed from Adrien’s bedroom.

A slow, toxic smile spread across Lucian’s face as he heard Adrien’s planted message.

He picked up a second, burner phone from his desk and dialed an international number with a Miami area code.

"It’s Vance," Lucian whispered into the receiver. "He’s back early, but he’s stupid. He's going to the South Chicago docks tomorrow night at midnight alone. Set the ambush. This time... make sure he doesn't leave the docks alive."
