Chapter 5 - The Snake's Master

The Private Crystal Room on the top floor of the Grand Palmer Hotel was an artifact of 1920s luxury—gilded mirrors, velvet armchairs, and crystal chandeliers that cast yellow light across dark mahogany paneling.
At seventy-two, Don Salvatore Moretti looked like a harmless grandfather with silver hair and tailored silk suits. But behind his warm blue eyes lay fifty years of brutal mafia warfare.
When Adrien Romano entered the room at 8:00 PM, flanked by six armed guards, Salvatore was sitting at a small table, sipping an aperitif.
"Adrien," Salvatore greeted him with an expansive gesture. "Sit, sit! It has been too many years since I held court with Harrison Romano’s son."
Adrien sat down across from the old Don, refusing the glass of wine offered by a waiter. "Let’s skip the nostalgia, Salvatore. Lucian Vance is currently sitting in my cellar. He gave me every wire transfer, every meeting location, and every contract he signed with your underbosses over fifteen years."
Salvatore sighed, setting his glass down with a delicate click. "Lucian was a greedy dog, Adrien. He came to me fifteen years ago, offering information about your father’s estate. I paid him. Any businessman would have done the same. But I had no desire to wage a war with you in Chicago."
"You financed an ambush seven years ago that killed three of my men," Adrien said, his voice flat and deadly. "You attempted to put a hit on me three nights ago at the South Chicago docks. That is not business, Salvatore. That is an act of war."
Salvatore leaned forward, his friendly smile vanishing, replaced by a cold, reptilian stare.
"Let us be frank, young man," Salvatore whispered. "You have no heir. You have no wife. You live alone in a giant stone fortress like a ghost. If you die, the Romano family falls into chaos in twenty-four hours. My family has six sons, thirty grandsons, and four hundred soldiers between Miami and New York. You cannot win a war of attrition against me."
Adrien chuckled—a quiet, terrifying sound that made the old Don’s bodyguards shift uncomfortably.
"You think my vulnerability is that I stand alone, Salvatore?" Adrien asked, leaning in close. "You have it backward. When a man has nothing to lose, he hesitates. But when a man finds something worth protecting... he becomes capable of tearing down entire cities."
Salvatore’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"As of 6:00 PM tonight," Adrien said, pulling a document from his coat and laying it on the table, "the Romano Syndicate has acquired ninety percent of the debt notes on your shipping ports in Miami. By Monday morning, every vessel carrying your cargo will be impounded by maritime marshals. You are bankrupt, Salvatore."
Salvatore stood up so fast his chair flipped backward onto the carpet. "You dare—"
"I dare because this is my city," Adrien stood up, his towering six-foot-three frame completely casting a shadow over the old Don. "Take your surviving men and leave Illinois by midnight. If I see a single Moretti soldier in Chicago after twelve o'clock, I will not send lawyers. I will send my captains."
Without waiting for an answer, Adrien turned on his heel and walked out of the Crystal Room, his coat billowing behind him like black wings.
As Adrien’s convoy drove back toward the Greystone estate through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, Arthur Pendelton turned from the front seat.
"Salvatore won't leave quietly, Adrien," Arthur warned. "He’s an old rat cornered in a trap. He will strike at whatever he thinks you hold dear."
Adrien looked out the window at the city lights, his hand instinctively reaching into his coat pocket to touch the small, folded crayon drawing he carried everywhere now.
A cold jolt of adrenaline shot through his veins.
Zoe. Grace.
"Arthur," Adrien commanded urgently. "Call the gate house. Secure the perimeter of the estate immediately!"
Arthur pulled out his phone, dialed the main gate, but after three rings, the line went to static.

"Adrien," Arthur’s voice cracked with panic. "The primary security line to the estate is down."
"Drive faster!" Adrien roared at his chauffeur. "Get us to the estate NOW!"
