Chapter 4 - The Whispers of Chicago

Word of the purge swept through the Chicago underworld like a summer wildfire.

In less than forty-eight hours, Adrien Romano had dismantled the entire local network of the Miami Moretti syndicate, arrested twenty high-ranking traitors within his own organization, and re-established complete, absolute dominance over every shipping line, casino, and commercial property in the city.

The men who had once whispered that Adrien was growing soft were silenced forever. The cold efficiency with which he executed the counter-offensive proved that the Romano lion was more dangerous than ever.

Yet, inside the walls of the Greystone estate, a completely different transformation was taking place.

The cold, silent halls that had felt like a marble mausoleum for seven years were suddenly filled with life.

It began with small changes. Adrien ordered the heavy black velvet drapes in the main drawing room pulled back, allowing the bright morning sunlight to flood the polished oak floors. He instructed the kitchen staff to stop preparing single-plate dinners for his lonely dining room; instead, he moved his evening meals to the sunny breakfast parlor overlooking the rose gardens.

And every morning at 7:30 AM, three chairs were set at the table.

Grace sat across from Adrien, wearing a simple burgundy wool dress he had ordered for her from a high-end boutique in downtown Chicago. Next to her sat Zoe, propped up on two leather cushions so her chin reached the table, happily dipping strawberries into warm cream while Bear sat upright on a small silver plate beside her.

"She shouldn't be eating at your table, Mr. Romano," Grace murmured nervously on Friday morning, adjusting her napkin. "The staff... they are talking. They say it isn't proper for a housekeeper and her child to sit with the head of the family."

Adrien set down his gold-rimmed coffee cup, looking at Grace with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"The staff works for me, Grace," Adrien said, his voice smooth and firm. "And I decide who sits at my table. You and Zoe saved my life. More than that... you brought light back into a house that was dying."

Zoe reached over with a strawberry-stained finger and poked Adrien’s hand. "Look, Mr. Adrien! Bear wants a strawberry too!"

Without hesitation, the billion-dollar mafia boss—the man feared by lords of crime across two continents—picked up a small strawberry and gravely set it on Bear’s silver plate. "There you go, Bear. Eat up. We have a big day ahead."

Grace covered her mouth, a soft, musical laugh escaping her lips. It was the first time Adrien had heard her laugh—a clear, beautiful sound that echoed through the parlor, making his chest fill with a warmth he had never known before.

"What is your plan for the weekend, Grace?" Adrien asked, his eyes lingering on her smile.

"I have to clean the library archives," Grace said, regaining her professional composure. "And then I need to take Zoe to the dentist in North Chicago. Her check-up was due last month, but... I had to wait until payday."

Adrien frowned slightly, a flash of annoyance touching his eyes. "You will not take her to a public clinic in North Chicago. My private doctor, Dr. Mercer, will come to the estate tomorrow at two."

"Mr. Romano, that’s too expensive—"

"Grace," Adrien interrupted softly, leaning across the table and placing his hand gently over hers. "Money is something I have too much of. What I didn't have was a family worth spending it on. Let me do this."

Grace looked at his hand resting over hers—strong, warm, and protective—and felt a blush creep up her neck. For two years, since Daniel’s death, she had been fighting the cold world entirely alone, carrying the weight of grief, debt, and fear on her young shoulders.

For the first time, someone was stepping in front of her, offering a shield that felt completely unshakeable.

Just then, Arthur Pendelton stepped into the parlor, carrying a dark leather briefcase.

"Good morning, Adrien," Arthur said, nodding respectfully to Grace and Zoe. "We have a slight complication."

Adrien’s expression instantly turned cold and professional as he pulled his hand back. "What kind of complication?"

"The Moretti family’s supreme leader, Don Salvatore Moretti, has just arrived in Chicago," Arthur reported quietly. "He has requested an emergency sit-down at the Grand Palmer Hotel tonight at eight. He claims he had no knowledge of Lucian Vance’s actions and wants to offer a peace settlement."

Adrien stood up, pulling his jacket straight. "Salvatore Moretti doesn't make peace, Arthur. He buys time."

"Are you going to go?" Grace asked, her voice tight with sudden anxiety, her eyes wide with fear for him.

Adrien looked down at Grace, seeing the genuine concern in her eyes. The feeling of having someone worry for his safety when he walked out the door was entirely new—and intoxicatingly sweet.

"I’m going, Grace," Adrien said, reaching down to gently pat Zoe’s head. "And I’m coming back in time to hear Zoe’s bedtime story."
