Chapter 7 - The Healing of Greystone

Spring arrived in Chicago six weeks later.
The dark, cold clouds that usually hovered over Lake Michigan gave way to brilliant blue skies and warm breezes that blew through the ancient oak trees surrounding the Greystone estate.
The mansion was no longer recognizable as the silent fortress it had been for seven years.
The heavy black drapes had been completely removed, replaced by airy white linen that fluttered in the spring air. The gardens were blooming with red roses, white lilies, and lavender. In the courtyard behind the main house, a massive wooden playground had been constructed—complete with three slides, two swings, and a small playhouse painted bright pink.
At 2:00 PM on a Saturday afternoon, Adrien Romano sat on a wooden bench beside the playground, wearing a simple navy polo shirt and chinos—a dramatic departure from the tailored dark suits he had worn every day of his life.
Beside him sat Grace, her long hair tied back in a loose braid, wearing a soft yellow sundress. She was reading a book, her shoulder resting comfortably against Adrien’s arm.
Out on the lawn, Zoe was running happily after a six-month-old Golden Retriever puppy named "Crayon"—a gift Adrien had bought her for her fourth birthday two weeks ago.
"Look, Mama! Look, Mr. Adrien!" Zoe shouted, her laughter echoing across the green grass as Crayon tumbled over his own paws trying to chase a red rubber ball. "Crayon caught the ball!"
Grace smiled, leaning her head against Adrien’s shoulder. "She hasn't mentioned the loud men once since we built the playground, Adrien. She sleeps through the night now."
Adrien reached over, taking Grace’s hand and interlacing his fingers with hers. "And what about you, Grace? Do you sleep through the night?"
Grace looked up at him, her dark eyes filled with a soft, profound warmth. "I sleep better than I have in three years. Because every time I open my eyes... I see you sitting in the armchair beside my bed."
Adrien smiled—a warm, gentle expression that made his sharp features look ten years younger.
Over the past three months, Adrien had systematically reorganized his entire corporate empire. He handed over the day-to-day operations of the legitimate shipping terminals and investment funds to Arthur Pendelton and a carefully selected board of trustees. He closed down the dark, illegal networks that had caused his family so much pain, transferring the family’s wealth into clean, transparent international foundations.
He was no longer the feared "Mafia Boss of Chicago." He was simply Adrien Romano—a billionaire businessman, a philanthropist, and a man who had finally found his way home.
"Grace," Adrien spoke quietly, his voice dropping into a serious, heartfelt register.
Grace turned her head to face him fully. "Yes, Adrien?"
Adrien reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet ring box.
Grace’s breath hitched in her throat.
"Two years ago," Adrien said softly, looking deep into her eyes, "I was a dead man walking through a dead house. I thought love was a weapon used to destroy people. I thought attachments were weaknesses. And then a three-year-old girl polished my shoes with crayon on her hands, and her mother walked into my life with enough courage to face an army."
He opened the velvet box. Inside sat a breathtaking five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, flanked by two delicate sapphire stones.

"You and Zoe didn't just save my life, Grace," Adrien whispered, his eyes shining with tears of pure devotion. "You gave me a soul. I want to spend every sunrise, every sunset, and every year I have left protecting you, loving you, and being a father to Zoe. Will you marry me?"
Grace covered her mouth, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. "Oh, Adrien... yes! Yes, of course!"
