Chapter 9 - The Legacy RestoredOne year after the wedding.

The Greystone mansion was bathed in golden late-afternoon sunlight.
In the grand library—a room that had once been dark, dusty, and locked away—a grand family portrait now hung above the majestic stone fireplace.
The painting depicted Adrien sitting in a comfortable leather chair, looking healthy, relaxed, and deeply happy. Beside him stood Grace, her hand resting lovingly on his shoulder. Sitting on Adrien’s lap was five-year-old Zoe, holding Bear, and sitting on the rug at their feet was Crayon, the Golden Retriever.
Beside the grand portrait hung a small, glass-framed shadowbox.
Inside the shadowbox sat the original crumpled crayon drawing Zoe had made two years ago—the drawing of the green snake, the red watch, and the four black boxes. Beneath it sat the single, badly polished Italian Oxford shoe Zoe had worked on the night Adrien came home early.
Arthur Pendelton walked into the library, carrying a set of architectural blueprints.
"Good afternoon, Adrien," Arthur smiled warmly. "The blueprints for the Harrison & Grace Romano Children’s Hospital in downtown Chicago have been finalized by the city council. Construction begins next month."
Adrien stepped away from his desk, taking the blueprints from Arthur. "Five hundred beds, Arthur. State-of-the-art pediatric oncology, emergency care, and free housing for families who can't afford local lodging."
"Your father would be immensely proud, Adrien," Arthur said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "You took an empire built on fear and turned it into an empire of healing."
Just then, the double doors of the library swung open.
Grace stepped into the room, holding a bundle wrapped in a soft blue blanket. Five-year-old Zoe walked beside her, stepping quietly on tiptoes so as not to wake the sleeping baby.
Adrien’s face lit up instantly. He set the blueprints aside and walked over to his family.
"How is he?" Adrien asked softly, looking down at his newborn son—Daniel Harrison Romano, born three weeks ago.
"He just finished his milk," Grace whispered, handing the baby gently into Adrien’s strong, protective arms. "He’s as quiet and peaceful as his father."
Adrien held his son close, looking down at the baby’s tiny, perfect face, feeling a deep, profound sense of completeness wash over his heart. He looked at Zoe, who reached up to touch the baby’s small hand.
"Are you going to teach him how to polish shoes when he gets bigger, Zoe?" Adrien teased gently.
May you like
Zoe giggled, shaking her head. "No! Mama said I’m not allowed to touch shoe polish anymore! But I can teach him how to draw green snakes!"
Everyone in the room laughed—a bright, warm, joyous sound that filled every corner of the magnificent estate.
