Chapter 2 - The Softness Behind the Steel

Damian crossed the distance between the office and her bedside in two long strides, dropping to his knees beside her bed.
"Clare," he said, taking her trembling right hand between his palms, his voice rough with emotion. "Don't try to move."
Clare looked at her bandaged left wrist, then up at his exhausted, shadow-streaked face. "The... the pen..."
"I have it," Damian assured her gently, brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. "I found the microfilm, Clare. I know everything."
Tears welling in her eyes, Clare let out a long, shuddering breath. "I tried to tell you on Monday... in your office. I noticed the discrepancies in the Zurich port account. When I dug deeper, I found his private server credentials. I realized... Marcus was selling your shipping routes to the rival syndicate in Chicago."
"Hush," Damian whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the back of her bruised knuckles. "You don't need to explain anything right now. You saved my empire, Clare. But you almost cost me your life."
Clare’s fingers tightened around his. "I hid in the archive room when his men came for me. I broke the pen and swallowed the key to the vault, but they hit me..." She shuddered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I thought you wouldn't come. I thought... I was just a secretary to you."
Damian felt a sharp, agonized pang in his chest. He stood up slowly, leaned over her, and placed his forehead against hers, closing his eyes.
"You have never been just a secretary to me, Clare Bennett," he confessed, his voice thick with a vulnerability he had never allowed another human soul to witness. "For four years, you have been the only anchor keeping me human in a world of monsters. If I had lost you in that cellar, I would have burned this city to the ground."
Clare looked up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs, seeing the fierce, unshielded devotion shining in his dark eyes.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ICU suite slammed open.
Marcus Vale walked into the room, flanked by four armed guards, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Damian," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes scanning the monitors before settling on Clare. "I came as soon as I heard she woke up. We need to secure her statement before the authorities get involved."

Damian stood up straight, turning slowly to face his father's killer. The softness in his eyes vanished, replaced by the lethal, cold authority of the most dangerous mafia lord in New York.
"Marcus," Damian said softly, a dark smile touching his lips. "I was just telling Clare how much I appreciate your... guidance over the years."
