Chapter 4 - The Shadow War Begins

By midnight, news of Marcus Vale's sudden downfall sent shockwaves through the New York underworld.
Rival families who had relied on Marcus's insider leaks to undercut Moretti Global were thrown into absolute panic. The Chicago syndicate, led by the ruthless Dominic Rossi, realized their primary mole inside New York had been exposed.
Inside the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower, where Damian had relocated Clare for her safety, the air was thick with tactical tension.
Clare sat on a plush velvet sofa wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, a laptop resting on her lap despite Damian's repeated orders for her to rest. Her left wrist was bound in a sleek medical brace, but her mind was as sharp as ever.
"Dominic Rossi won't wait for you to consolidate Marcus's assets, Damian," Clare said, typing slowly with her right hand. "I’m looking at the Chicago trade ledgers. Marcus pledged thirty percent of our Manhattan fuel terminals as collateral for a private loan from Rossi."
Damian walked over, holding a mug of hot tea, and set it on the table beside her. He sat down beside her, taking the laptop from her hands and setting it aside.
"You are off the clock, Clare," he murmured softly.
"Damian, this is critical—"
"What is critical," Damian interrupted, wrapping his arm gently around her shoulders and pulling her against his chest, "is that you breathe. My men are handling the terminals. Rossi is a dog barking behind a fence."
Clare rested her head against his shoulder, feeling the deep, steady rise and fall of his chest. For four years, she had maintained a strict professional boundary, wearing tailored suits and keeping her tone neutral, hiding the intense attraction she had felt for her enigmatic boss since her very first interview.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Clare asked softly, her fingers tracing the seam of his shirt.
"Tell you what?"
"That you... cared for me."
Damian was quiet for a moment, looking out at the glittering lights of Manhattan.
"Because my world is toxic, Clare," he confessed, his voice rich with quiet emotion. "Every person who gets close to me becomes a target. I thought if I kept you at arm's length—if I kept our relationship professional—I was protecting you. I thought my distance was your shield."
He lifted her chin with his thumb, forcing her to meet his dark, sincere gaze.

"I was wrong. My distance almost got you killed. I will never keep my distance again."
Clare lifted her face and pressed her lips softly against his. The kiss was gentle at first, hesitant, but as Damian’s hand moved behind her neck, pulling her closer, it deepened into a passionate, breathtaking surrender that banished every memory of the dark cellar beneath the warehouse.
