Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The following Monday morning, Manhattan’s financial district was blanketed in a crisp, autumn fog. The fifty-story glass tower of Bennett Logistics stood as a monument to Arya’s late father’s legacy—a global shipping and supply-chain conglomerate worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

For months, Marcus had systematically replaced key board members with his own cronies, preparing to vote himself in as Chief Executive Officer during the annual board meeting scheduled for ten o'clock that morning.

At nine-forty-five, Marcus sat at the head of the mahogany conference table on the top floor, wearing a sharp grey suit, a fresh bandage discreetly covering a cut on his lip from his fall in Brooklyn. He was smiling nervously, tapping his expensive fountain pen against his notepad as his allied board members chatted around him.

"We have the proxy votes, Marcus," whispered Arthur Pendelton, an elderly, greedy board member who had been bribed with offshore stock options. "Without Arya here to object, your appointment as CEO will pass unanimously."

"Good," Marcus spat under his breath, his eyes cold and vengeful. "Once I have control of Bennett's shipping fleets, I can leverage the assets to clear my debts with the Ricci family's rivals in Queens. Damiano Ricci thinks he won the first round. I'm going to bankrupt him."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom suddenly burst open.

Two private security guards belonging to Bennett Logistics attempted to step inside, but they were smoothly shoved aside by Marco and three other giant men in dark suits wearing Ricci emblem pins on their lapels.

The entire boardroom fell instantly silent.

Arya Bennett walked into the room.

She looked entirely unrecognizable from the timid, terrified girl who had attended the Harrington Gala four nights prior. She wore a tailored black double-breasted pantsuit, high heels that clicked with razor-sharp precision against the marble floor, and her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. Her chin was held high, her dark eyes flashing with absolute, unyielding determination.

And walking half a step behind her, acting as her silent, terrifying shadow, was Damiano Ricci.

The temperature in the boardroom plummeted to absolute zero. Several older board members gasped, recognizing Damiano instantly, their faces turning chalk-white.

Marcus slammed his hands on the table, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the glass wall. "Arya! What is the meaning of this?! This is a private board meeting! You can't just bring mafia thugs into—"

"I am the majority shareholder of Bennett Logistics, Marcus," Arya interrupted, her voice cutting through his outrage like a diamond blade. She didn't shout. She didn't tremble. Her voice was cool, precise, and completely commanding. "I own thirty percent of this company outright, and I hold the proxy rights for another twenty-five percent through my family's private trust. I have every right to be in this room. You, on the other hand, are an uninvited guest."

Marcus sneered, trying to regain his dominant posture. "You gave me full voting proxy three weeks ago, Arya! You signed the legal documents in my apartment!"

Arya stopped at the opposite end of the long mahogany table. Damiano stepped up beside her, placing his large, warm hand lightly on the back of her chair—a subtle, undeniable signal to every person in the room that she was under his absolute protection.

"Those documents were signed under physical coercion and duress," Arya declared, pulling a thick document from her leather briefcase and tossing it onto the table. "This is a formal revocation of all proxies granted to Marcus Vance, certified by the New York State Supreme Court as of eight o'clock this morning."

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves. Arthur Pendelton reached for the document, his hands shaking as he read the court seal.

"Furthermore," Arya continued, leaning forward, resting her hands on the table, staring directly into Marcus’s panicked eyes, "an independent forensic audit conducted over the weekend has revealed that Vance Global Capital has embezzled twelve million dollars from Bennett Logistics’ pension fund over the last six months."

"That's a lie!" Marcus roared, his face flushing crimson. "She's lying! She's being manipulated by Ricci! He's trying to launch a hostile takeover of Bennett Logistics!"

Damiano finally spoke.

He didn't raise his voice. He simply took one slow step forward, resting his hands on the back of Arya’s chair, his blue eyes sweeping over the frightened board members like a predator evaluating prey.

"Every board member who votes in favor of Marcus Vance today," Damiano said softly, "will be named as a co-conspirator in the federal indictment being filed by the United States Attorney’s Office at noon. Additionally, their personal lines of credit with every major financial institution in the Northeast will be permanently terminated by sunset."

Absolute silence descended upon the room. No one dared to breathe.

Arthur Pendelton slowly pulled his hand back from Marcus’s proxy file, looking down at his desk, completely pale. One by one, the other board members lowered their heads, shifting their chairs away from Marcus as if he were carrying a contagious plague.

Marcus looked around the table, realizing in one terrifying second that his power, his influence, and his grand scheme had completely evaporated.

"You bitch," Marcus hissed, his control snapping entirely. He reached into his coat pocket, moving toward Arya with blind, feral rage. "I made you! You're nothing without me!"

Before Marcus could take two steps, Damiano moved with terrifying, lightning speed.

In one fluid motion, Damiano stepped around the table, grabbed Marcus by the throat, and slammed his head violently against the mahogany surface. The sickening crack of wood and bone echoed through the room. Marcus shrieked in pain as Damiano pinned his arm behind his back, forcing him down until his face was pressed flat against the polished wood.

A small, silver pocketknife Marcus had pulled from his coat clattered harmlessly onto the carpet.

Damiano leaned down, his face inches from Marcus’s bleeding ear.

"I told you what would happen if you came near her again," Damiano whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intent. "You are finished, Vance."

Marco stepped forward with two Ricci guards, snapping heavy steel zip-ties around Marcus’s wrists and hauling him to his feet. Marcus was sobbing, blood dripping from his nose onto his shirt, his spirit completely broken.

Damiano straightened his jacket, adjusting his tie without a single hair out of place. He turned to the terrified board members, who were sitting frozen in their seats.

"Miss Bennett will now assume her rightful position as Chairwoman of the Board," Damiano announced calmly. "I suggest you all begin your meeting."

He turned to Arya, bowing his head slightly with deep, genuine respect.

Arya looked at Marcus being dragged out of the room in hand-cuffs, then looked up at Damiano. The dark, suffocating fog that had trapped her for eight months had finally cleared. She was free.

And as she looked into Damiano’s steady blue eyes, she realized her heart was no longer racing out of fear.

It was racing for him.
