Chapter 6 - The Blood Alliance

The battle above lasted another twenty agonizing minutes before the CCTV screens in the vault gradually went quiet. Fire sprinklers were running in the main foyer, washing blood down the grand marble staircase into pink streams.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

Three heavy metallic knocks sounded against the titanium vault door.

Arya stood up instantly from the console, her hands clenched into tight fists, her heart pounding against her throat.

The heavy pneumatic bolts hissed, and the wheel began to turn slowly.

The vault door swung open.

Damiano stood in the doorway. He was drenched in water, soot, and crimson blood. His sweater was torn at the shoulder, revealing a superficial knife wound that bled freely down his arm. His face was covered in dirt, his hair disheveled, but his blue eyes were blazing with a fierce, victorious light.

Behind him, Marco and several surviving Ricci soldiers stood guard, their weapons lowered, their expressions filled with grim triumph.

Damiano stepped into the vault. He didn't look at his wounds. He didn't look at his ruined house. His eyes were fixed entirely on Arya.

Arya didn't hesitate. She didn't care about the blood, the soot, or the danger. She sprinted across the concrete floor and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest.

Damiano let out a low, rough breath, his strong arms wrapping tightly around her waist, pulling her up against his body as if she were the only real thing in a world of ghosts.

"You're safe," Damiano rasped into her dark hair, his body trembling slightly with spent adrenaline. "It is over, Arya. Moretti is dead. His men have fled."

"You're hurt," Arya sobbed, pulling back slightly to look at the bleeding cut on his temple and shoulder. "Damiano, you're bleeding..."

"It is nothing," Damiano murmured, raising a trembling, soot-stained hand to gently wipe a tear from her cheek. "A scratch. Nothing compared to the thought of losing you."

He looked down into her eyes, his expression raw, honest, and completely devoid of the icy facade he showed the world. In that subterranean vault, surrounded by cold steel and distant fires, the truth between them stood completely naked.

"I tried to convince myself this was just business," Damiano admitted, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional register. "I tried to tell myself I was merely protecting a helpless woman to uphold my reputation. But when Moretti called your name tonight... when I thought of him laying a finger on you... I realized I would burn the entire city to ash to keep you safe."

Arya’s heart swelled with an overwhelming, breathtaking warmth. She reached up, framing his blood-stained face with her soft hands, looking directly into his glacial eyes.

"I didn't kiss a stranger at that gala out of panic, Damiano," Arya confessed softly, her voice filled with absolute conviction. "I saw you standing by that column, and for the first time in my life, I saw a man who was strong enough to protect me, but good enough not to break me. I don't want to be safe anywhere else. I want to be with you."

Damiano stared at her for a long, quiet second, as if processing the sheer miracle of her words.

Then, leaning down, he captured her lips with his own.

The kiss was nothing like the frantic, desperate plea at the Harrington Gala. It was deep, slow, and devastatingly passionate. Damiano kissed her with the fierce, possessive reverence of a king claiming his queen, his hands sliding into her hair, holding her close against his chest. Arya melted into his touch, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders, giving herself completely to the fire rising between them.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, his breath hot against her skin, he whispered the words that sealed their fates forever:

"You are mine now, Arya. And I will never let you go."
