Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gates

"Incursion!" Marco’s voice roared through Damiano’s earpiece as automatic gunfire erupted from the dense woods near the front gates of the compound. "North wall breached! It's Moretti’s men! They brought heavy ordnance!"

Damiano didn't panic. His training and decades of commanding men kicked in instantly. In one smooth motion, he wrapped his arm around Arya’s waist, shielding her body with his own as he pulled her back inside the dining room, slamming the heavy reinforced oak doors shut.

"Marco! Lock down the perimeter teams! Fall back to primary defensive line B!" Damiano commanded into his lapel microphone, his voice dead calm amidst the rising chaos.

He turned to Arya, taking her face in both of his hands. "Listen to me. Marco is going to take you to the subterranean safe room beneath the wine cellar. It is reinforced with ten inches of solid steel. You stay inside until I come for you."

"No!" Arya cried, her hands clutching his sweater. "Damiano, they came with heavy weapons! Come with me!"

"If I go into hiding, Moretti’s men will tear this house apart until they find us," Damiano said, his eyes blazing with a fierce, terrifying light. "This is my home, Arya. I do not hide from trash in my own house."

He reached into his leather shoulder holster concealed beneath his sweater, pulling out a sleek, dark grey custom semi-automatic pistol, checking the chamber with practiced, lethal efficiency.

Marco burst into the dining room, holding a tactical carbine, his face covered in soot. "Boss! They’ve breached the main courtyard! We’re holding them at the fountain, but there are at least twenty of them!"

"Take her to the vault, Marco," Damiano ordered, stepping toward the double doors. "And if a single bullet comes near her, I will execute you myself."

"Understood, Boss!" Marco yelled, turning to Arya. "Miss Bennett, we move now!"

Arya looked back at Damiano as he stepped out into the grand hallway. The sight of him—tall, broad, holding a weapon with lethal grace, stepping into a war zone to keep her safe—seemed burned into her memory forever.

"Damiano!" she screamed over the deafening roar of automatic gunfire echoing through the halls. "Don't die!"

A dark, dangerous smile touched Damiano’s lips for a split second. "I have something worth living for now, Arya. Go!"

Marco pulled her through a hidden panel in the library wall, down a flight of narrow spiral stone steps into the cold, concrete depths beneath the estate. They reached a massive steel vault door. Marco punched in an eight-digit code on a glowing keypad, turning a heavy mechanical wheel until the pneumatic bolts disengaged with a loud hiss.

He shoved her inside the vault, where emergency lights illuminated plush leather seating, bank vaults of emergency rations, and a wall of live CCTV monitors displaying every corner of the estate.

"Stay inside, Miss Bennett," Marco said, pulling the door shut from the outside. "It will be over soon."

The heavy steel door locked shut with a sickening thud, leaving Arya in relative silence, separated from the war raging above.

She ran to the CCTV console, her eyes scanning the flickering screens.

On the main courtyard camera, a nightmare was unfolding. Rain was pouring down, illuminated by orange firelight from burning security vehicles. Dozens of men in black tactical gear were firing automatic weapons at the house.

In the center of the grand marble foyer, Damiano moved like a shadow demon.

He didn't fire wildly. Every shot he took dropped an intruder with terrifying, surgical precision. When three mercenaries breached the front mahogany doors, Damiano flanked them from the shadow of the grand staircase, dropping two with lightning-fast shots before closing the distance on the third, disarming him with brutal efficiency and using him as a human shield against a spray of bullets.

Arya held her breath, her hand pressed against the glass monitor. He was terrifying. He was a monster to his enemies.

And yet, every move he made, every life he ended, was done to keep the steel door beneath his feet secure.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the library feed above. A section of the ceiling caved in, sending debris crashing down over the hidden entrance to the underground stairs.

On the screen, Sal Moretti himself stepped into the foyer—a squat, balding man in an expensive wool coat, holding a heavy revolver, flanked by four elite bodyguards.

"Ricci!" Moretti shouted over the crackle of fire. "It’s over! Your guards are dead or pinned down! Give me the girl and Bennett Logistics, and I’ll let you keep your life!"

Damiano stepped out from behind a marble pillar, his face covered in soot and blood from a graze on his temple. His pistol was empty, locked back on an empty slide. He didn't look defeated; he looked like a god of war contemplating a minor bug.

"You brought twenty men into my house, Sal," Damiano said, his voice echoing coldly through the burning foyer. "Sixteen of them are dead. You have four left."

Damiano discarded his empty weapon, pulling a long, silver-rimmed tactical blade from his belt.

"You brought pistols to a knife fight," Damiano whispered.

Before Moretti could order his men to fire, Damiano lunged forward into the smoke.
