Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Queens

Though Marcus Vance was ruined, penniless, and awaiting federal indictment, the war he had inadvertently triggered was far from over.
By seeking help from the Moretti syndicate—a ruthless, rival crime family based out of Queens—Marcus had left behind a massive debt. Sal Moretti, a vicious, old-school mob boss who had competed with the Ricci family for control of the New York docks for two decades, saw Arya Bennett not as a victim, but as a valuable asset to strike at Damiano Ricci’s growing dominance.
A week after the boardroom showdown, night fell over Damiano’s primary estate in Long Island.
Unlike the Brooklyn brownstone, this was a massive, walled compound sitting on twenty acres of coastal woodland. High stone walls, state-of-the-art security towers, and patrolling guards gave the estate an air of an impenetrable medieval fortress.
Inside the grand dining room, warm light spilled from a crystal chandelier onto a long oak table set with fine china and silver.
Arya sat at the head of the table across from Damiano. She wore a simple emerald green silk dress that highlighted her dark eyes and fair skin. Over the past week, under Damiano’s quiet, attentive care, the pale exhaustion on her face had given way to a radiant, healthy glow. She had resumed her work at Bennett Logistics, steering the company back to financial stability with incredible intelligence and poise.
Damiano poured two glasses of deep red Barolo wine, handing one across the table to her.
"To the new Chairwoman," Damiano said smoothly, raising his glass. "The board approved your restructuring plan this afternoon without a single objection."
Arya smiled, a genuine, beautiful sound escaping her lips as she clinked her glass against his. "They were too terrified of you to object, Damiano."
"Nonsense," Damiano replied, a rare, warm glint in his eyes. "They were impressed by your mind. You presented a brilliant supply-chain strategy. I merely ensured they listened without interrupting."
They ate in comfortable, intimate silence for a few moments. The subtle shift in their dynamic over the past week had been undeniable. What had started as an act of desperate mercy at a gala had grown into a deep, magnetic bond. Damiano treated her with an exquisite blend of ferocious protection and profound respect, never pushing her, never demanding anything in return for her safety.
Yet, every time his gaze met hers across a room, every time his hand brushed hers while opening a door, electric current flared between them.
"Damiano," Arya said softly, setting her fork down. "How long will I need to stay here? Marcus is in federal custody now. The immediate danger is gone..."
Damiano set his glass down slowly. The warmth in his expression dimmed, replaced by a dark, serious edge.
"Marcus was a small dog barking behind a fence, Arya," Damiano explained quietly. "Before he was arrested, he transferred your father's remaining international shipping bills of lading to Sal Moretti as collateral for his debts."
Arya’s breath hitched. "Sal Moretti? The Queens syndicate?"
"Moretti controls three major piers in Brooklyn," Damiano said. "With your father's shipping licenses, he could move illegal cargo across the Atlantic without passing federal customs inspections. Moretti knows that as long as you control Bennett Logistics, those licenses are useless to him. He will try to force you to sign them over."
"Then I'm still a target," she realized, her voice barely above a whisper.
Damiano stood up, walking around the long table until he was standing beside her chair. He held out his hand to her.
Arya took it without hesitation. His palm was broad, warm, and calloused—the hand of a man who ruled a dangerous world, yet held her as if she were made of delicate glass.
He gently pulled her to her feet, leading her toward the tall french doors that opened onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark, misty ocean.
"You are only a target if you are unprotected," Damiano murmured, looking down at her, his broad shoulders shielding her from the cold night breeze. "Moretti thinks he can intimidate me by threatening you. He does not understand that protecting you is no longer a matter of business."
Arya looked up into his striking blue eyes, her heart beating wildly against her ribs. "What is it then, Damiano?"
Damiano raised his hand, his long fingers gently tracing the line of her jawline, lingering at the soft hollow of her throat. The heat of his skin burned through her like wildfire.
"It is personal," Damiano whispered, his voice dark, smooth, and laced with an intense, possessive passion that made her knees weak. "You walked into my life on a desperate night, Arya. You placed your trust in my hands when you had every reason to fear men. I will burn Moretti's entire empire to the ground before I allow anyone to make you feel unsafe again."
Arya didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into his touch, her hand coming up to rest against his solid, warm chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart beneath his jacket.

"I'm not afraid anymore, Damiano," she whispered back, leaning up on her tiptoes. "Not when I'm with you."
Before Damiano could answer, a loud explosion rocked the far perimeter of the estate, sending a shockwave through the glass doors. Red emergency lights instantly flashed across the terrace as alarm sirens began to wail into the night sky.
