Chapter 10 - The Crown Reclaimed

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting brilliant shafts of golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti corporate headquarters on the fiftieth floor. The boardroom was packed to maximum capacity—board directors, institutional shareholders, media representatives, and federal investigators all seated in tense, expectant silence around the massive mahogany conference table.

The heavy oak double doors swung open.

Every head in the room turned toward the entrance.

Elena Bianchi walked in first, dressed with immaculate, untouchable elegance in a charcoal-grey tailored pantsuit, her dark hair pinned back in an intricate knot, holding a thick leather portfolio containing the signed confessions and financial ledgers recovered from Vincenzo’s secure servers.

And behind her, walking with slow, deliberate, measured steps supported by heavy black tactical canes, came Lorenzo Moretti.

He wore a custom-tailored dark navy suit that accentuated his powerful shoulders. Though he still walked with a pronounced limp and the mechanical assistance of his leg braces, every step he took across the polished hardwood floor resonated with absolute, unquestioned authority.

The room erupted into stunned, breathless murmurs. The myth of "The Invalid" shattered into dust before their eyes.

Lorenzo reached the head of the mahogany table, placing both hands flat on the polished wood surface, leaning forward slightly as his piercing gaze swept across every frightened, awestruck face in the room.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Lorenzo’s voice boomed, deep, resonant, and completely unshakeable. "I apologize for my brief absence from the office. It turns out, hostile takeovers require a bit of heavy lifting."

A nervous, appreciative chuckle rippled through the back of the room, quickly silenced by the sheer gravity of his presence.

Elena opened her leather portfolio, sliding a certified document across the table toward the lead independent board director. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, former Vice President Vincenzo Moretti has been formally stripped of all voting rights, corporate shares, and executive titles, pursuant to Section 9 of the federal racketeering indictments filed an hour ago. Furthermore, all family proxy shares—including the Bianchi estate alliance—are formally consolidated under the unified leadership of myself and my husband, CEO Lorenzo Moretti."

The lead director swallowed hard, looked up at Lorenzo, and slowly, respectfully, nodded. He picked up his pen and signed the ratification papers without uttering a single word of objection.

The meeting adjourned in record time. Within twenty minutes, the boardroom cleared out, leaving only Lorenzo and Elena standing alone by the massive glass windows overlooking the bustling shipping ports far below.

Elena walked over to him, standing close, resting a hand gently against his lapel. "You know, the doctors said you might never walk unsupported again."

Lorenzo looked down at her, the cold, ruthless mask of the underworld boss melting away, replaced by a deep, profound warmth. He reached out, gently wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"The doctors didn't know what kind of wife I had waiting for me," Lorenzo murmured softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out the heavy platinum medallion of the Sigillo della Rosa, slipping the thick chain around her neck where it rested against her collarbone, catching the morning light like a badge of honor.

"This belongs to both of us now," Lorenzo whispered, his eyes locked onto hers with fierce, eternal devotion. "The empire is safe. And we built it together."

Elena smiled, her amber eyes shining with absolute triumph. "Good. Because I was just getting warmed up."
