Chapter 2 - The Ambush at Dusk

The man who stepped through the doorway was not one of the estate's usual guards. He wore an unmarked tactical vest over a dark turtleneck, his skull shaved clean, a jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow down to his jawline. A professional. Someone Vincenzo had imported from the ruthless eastern syndicate connections in Marseille.
The intruder’s eyes swept the room instantly, bypassing the expensive furnishings, the priceless artwork, and landing directly on Lorenzo, who sat unmoving behind the massive mahogany desk, looking every bit the tragic, helpless figure the underworld believed him to be.
"Mr. Moretti," the operative said, his voice flat, accented by a harsh European cadence. "Mr. Vincenzo sends his regards. He says the transition of power is moving ahead of schedule."
Lorenzo didn't flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his forearms casually on the armrests, hiding the angle of his vision. "Vincenzo always was impatient. He never understood that an empire isn't built in a day; it’s maintained by blood and patience. Tell me, did he send you to finish the job his botched brake line started?"
The tactical operative let out a cold, humorless chuckle, stepping further into the study, his boots clicking softly against the Persian rug. He raised the barrel of the suppressed submachine gun, angling it lazily toward Lorenzo’s chest. "The brake line was a masterpiece of simplicity. It’s a shame you survived it. But tonight, there won't be any survivors to tell stories. An unfortunate fire, perhaps. A tragic end for the fallen heir and his new bride."
"You talk too much for a dead man," Lorenzo said softly.
The operative’s finger tightened on the trigger—just a millimeter—the micro-movement of muscle telegraphing his intent.
In that split second, the shadows near the fireplace erupted.
Elena didn't aim for center mass; she aimed for the weapon-bearing arm with cold, calculating precision. Crack! The silenced Sig Sauer barked once, a sharp, concussive slap that shattered the quiet of the study.
The bullet caught the operative’s right forearm, tearing through fabric, muscle, and bone with a sickening wet crunch. The submachine gun dropped from his shattered grip, clattering uselessly against the expensive wooden floorboards as the man screamed, clutching his mangled arm and stumbling backward.
Before he could recover his balance or draw a secondary sidearm from his tactical rig, Lorenzo surged forward with terrifying upper-body strength. Using the wheels of his custom chair to pivot violently, he slammed into the operative’s knees with the heavy steel frame, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him.
The operative crashed hard onto the Persian rug, the wind knocked out of him in a violent wheeze.
Lorenzo didn't hesitate. He drove his right fist—hardened by years of underground bare-knuckle fighting before he inherited the corporate throne—straight into the man’s jaw with a devastating, bone-crushing right hook. The operative’s head bounced off the floorboards, his eyes rolling back into his head as he slumped into unconsciousness.
The room fell dead silent again, save for the ragged, controlled breathing of Elena and the steady, heavy heaving of Lorenzo’s chest.
Elena lowered the smoking pistol slowly, her eyes wide, staring at the unconscious man at their feet, then up at her husband. There was no tremor in her hands. No breakdown of shock. Just a cold, galvanized resolve that mirrored his own.
"Well," Lorenzo said, breaking the silence, his voice dropping an octave as he looked down at the unconscious assassin. "It appears Vincenzo didn't just want to steal the CEO position. He wants total eradication."
Elena walked over from the shadows, her cream-colored lace dress pristine except for a single drop of dark blood that had splattered onto the hem. She looked down at the tactical vest, spotting a encrypted satellite radio clipped to the man's chest.
"He has a comms unit," she said, her voice steady. "Vincenzo is listening. Or at least, waiting for a confirmation call."

Lorenzo’s eyes flashed with a brilliant, predatory light. He reached down, unclipped the heavy radio from the unconscious man's vest, and tossed it into his lap.
"Let's give him an update," Lorenzo whispered, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across his face.
