Chapter 8 - The Library Trap

The west wing library was a cathedral of old money, housing over ten thousand leather-bound volumes, vaulted mahogany ceilings, and a massive stone fireplace that could easily roast an entire ox. In the center of the room, illuminated only by the green glow of a portable satellite uplink terminal resting on a mahogany reading table, the two remaining mercenaries were frantically typing commands into a ruggedized military laptop.

"The encryption firewall is locked! I can't punch through!" the communications specialist swore, hammering his fist onto the table. "Whoever set up this network built it with military-grade redundancy!"

"Forget the firewall! Just send a blind distress beacon to Vincenzo's private frequency!" the squad leader barked, pacing nervously near the towering bookshelves, his rifle raised and trembling slightly.

Creak.

The heavy double doors of the library swung open with agonizing slowness.

The two mercenaries spun around instantly, raising their weapons toward the threshold.

Entering the room was not a rush of men, but a single figure seated in a custom all-terrain wheelchair, rolling smoothly across the Persian rug with an aura of absolute, terrifying dominion. In his right hand, Lorenzo held his Sig Sauer pointed lazily at the floor, while behind him, Elena stepped out of the shadows with her weapon drawn and locked on target.

"End of the line, gentlemen," Lorenzo said, his voice ringing smooth and cold through the cavernous room.

"You—you're the invalid!" the squad leader spat, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at the wheelchair. "Vincenzo said you couldn't even stand!"

"Vincenzo is a lot of things," Lorenzo replied, rolling forward until he was ten feet away from the reading table. "Well-informed is not one of them."

The squad leader’s face twisted into a desperate, feral snarl. He knew they were trapped. There were no windows, no secondary exits, and the heavy oak doors behind Lorenzo were secured from the outside. With a suicidal roar of adrenaline, he raised his assault rifle, aiming straight at Lorenzo’s chest.

"Die, you cri—"

Crack! Crack!

Elena didn't give him the chance to finish the slur. Her pistol fired twice with machine-like precision. The first bullet shattered the squad leader’s collarbone; the second caught him in the shoulder, spinning him around and dropping him hard onto the floor, his rifle skidding across the rug.

The communications specialist dropped his laptop instantly, throwing his hands up in the air, his face pale as death. "I surrender! Don't shoot! I surrender!"

Lorenzo rolled his chair right up to the trembling mercenary, stopping just inches from his knees. He reached out, grabbed the man by the collar of his tactical vest, and hauled him forward until their faces were inches apart.

"You're going to make a phone call for me, aren't you?" Lorenzo whispered.

"Y-yes! Anything! Just don't kill me!" the mercenary whimpered.

Lorenzo released his grip, letting the man slump back into his chair, and pushed the ruggedized military laptop across the table toward him.

"Call Vincenzo," Lorenzo ordered, a dangerous, cold smile spreading across his lips. "Tell him the cleanup crew finished the job. Tell him the bodies are disposed of, and the estate is secured. Tell him to meet us at the old Moretti shipping yards on Pier 42 at midnight to celebrate his victory."

The mercenary swallowed hard, his hands shaking violently as he reached for the satellite phone. "And if he asks why I'm using an unsecured line?"

"Tell him the estate's communications were fried by a power surge," Lorenzo replied smoothly. "He's too arrogant and greedy to question good news. He'll run straight into the trap."
