Chapter 5 - The Grid Goes Dark

The control room hummed with the synchronized pulse of a dozen high-end server racks and glowing monitor banks displaying live feeds from every corner of the vast estate. When Lorenzo hoisted himself through the floor hatch, his wheelchair locking smoothly into a floor-mounted stabilization dock Elena had prepared, he took in the tactical layout with a single, sweeping glance.
"Clean entry?" Lorenzo asked, wheeling himself up to the main master console.
"Empty," Elena replied, her fingers already dancing across the secondary keyboard, pulling up thermal and motion sensors throughout the mansion. "It looks like Vincenzo sent a four-man cleanup crew. They entered through the kitchen service entrance three minutes ago. Right now, they're sweeping the ground-floor receiving hall."
Lorenzo leaned over the main console, his knuckles white as he gripped the edges of the heavy metal desk. His eyes scanned the live camera feeds. On screen four, two men in tactical gear with suppressed rifles were methodically checking behind marble pillars, their movements tense and professional.
"They're looking for bodies," Lorenzo muttered darkly. "They think Alpha-One checked out permanently."
"Let's give them a reason to believe it," Elena said, her voice dangerously calm. She pointed to a heavy master breaker switch labeled EXTREME ISOLATION GRID. "If we flip that, what happens?"
"We kill all auxiliary power to the north and east wings," Lorenzo grinned, a cold, calculating expression settling over his features. "The smart-locks lock down permanently on dead-bolt mode, the interior lights drop to emergency red backup power, and the automated security shutters drop over every window on the ground floor. It turns the mansion into a concrete tomb."
"Do it," Elena instructed without a fraction of hesitation.
Lorenzo reached out and slammed his palm down onto the heavy steel master switch.
Instantly, the bright fluorescent lights of the control room flickered and died, replaced by the throbbing, crimson wash of low-voltage emergency strobes. Across the entire estate, a loud, mechanical CLANG echoed through the foundations as massive steel security shutters slammed down over every glass window and French door, plunging the interior into pitch-black shadow, punctuated only by dim emergency red lighting.
Through the security monitors, they watched the four mercenaries instantly panic. Flashlights flared to life in the darkness, cutting frantic cones of white light through the red haze.

"Who's there?!" shouted one of the operatives on the audio feed, his voice cracking with sudden, unexpected terror as the reinforced smart-doors slammed shut around them, sealing them inside the main corridor like a vault. "The grid just dropped! We're locked in!"
"Now," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dripping with venomous authority, "we hunt."
