Chapter 4 - Beneath the Foundation

The subterranean service tunnels beneath the Moretti estate were carved straight out of the native limestone bedrock during Prohibition, reinforced with thick ribbing of poured concrete and iron beams designed to withstand a direct artillery blast. Dust hung heavy in the air, smelling of damp earth, rust, and forgotten decades of illicit whiskey crates and smuggled cargo ledgers.

Lorenzo maneuvered his custom, all-terrain wheelchair—fitted with heavy rubber treads instead of standard hospital wheels—effortlessly over the rough concrete floor. Elena walked closely beside him, carrying a high-powered tactical flashlight in one hand and keeping her finger resting safely along the frame of her pistol in the other.

"The main control room for the estate's security grid is located at the intersection of Sector Four," Lorenzo explained, his voice echoing softly off the damp walls. "Vincenzo thinks he locked us out of the mainframe by changing the master admin codes from his office downtown. But my father never trusted remote tech. There is a hardwired analog override switch directly beneath the main mansion's floorboards."

"If Vincenzo’s men are searching the house upstairs right now, won't they hear us down here?" Elena asked, shining her beam down a dark side-corridor that branched off into the gloom.

"The acoustics of the bedrock trap the sound," Lorenzo reassured her, though his eyes darted constantly into the shadows. "Besides, they'll be looking in the bedrooms, the offices, the wine cellar. They won't expect us to move through the plumbing and electrical shafts."

They reached a heavy iron hatch set directly into the stone wall, marked with a faded, stenciled letter S-4. Lorenzo reached out, grabbing a heavy iron lever mounted to the side, and pulled down with a massive exertion of his upper body strength. With a loud, pneumatic hiss, the rusted bolts slid back, and the hatch swung open, revealing a vertical ladder leading up into darkness, illuminated only by a faint, amber glow leaking through a floor vent above.

"This vents straight into the estate's central security control booth," Lorenzo whispered, peering up into the grate. "From there, we can lock down every exterior door, cut power to the east wing, and trap whatever cleaners Vincenzo sent inside like rats in a maze."

Elena stepped up to the ladder, holstering her pistol securely across her chest harness. "I'll go up first. Secure the perimeter of the room, then drop a rope down to hoist you and the chair."

Lorenzo started to object—his pride as a former titan of the underworld bristling at the notion of being hoisted like cargo—but one look at her fierce, unyielding amber eyes silenced him. She wasn't treating him like a broken man; she was treating him like an equal partner in combat.

"Be careful," Lorenzo grunted, nodding his consent. "If anyone's up there, don't hesitate. Shoot to kill."

With silent agility, Elena scaled the ladder, her boots finding the rungs with practiced grace. She reached the top, pushed gently against the heavy metal floor vent, and slipped out of sight into the shadows of the control room above.

Lorenzo waited in the damp stillness of the tunnel, his hand resting on the grip of his pistol, his ears straining for any sound of betrayal. A minute ticked by—an eternity in the dark.

Then, a braided nylon rope dropped smoothly through the open hatch, landing softly across his lap.

Two sharp tugs on the rope signaled it was secure.

Lorenzo hooked the heavy-duty tactical harness attached to his chair onto the reinforced carabiner at the end of the rope, locked the safety locks on his wheels, and grabbed the line. With a guttural grunt of pure, unadulterated physical power, he began pulling himself upward into the light, ready to reclaim his empire.
