Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The secure satellite radio clicked softly as Lorenzo thumbed the transmission button, holding it down with a deliberate, heavy thumb. The ambient hum of the study seemed to amplify, every tick of the antique grandfather clock in the corner serving as a metronome for the psychological warfare he was about to unleash.

"Alpha-One, do you read?" a voice crackled through the encrypted speaker. It was smooth, arrogant, and unmistakably Vincenzo Moretti. The voice of a man who believed he had already won the war before the first real battle had even begun. "Report status. Is the package secured?"

Lorenzo didn't speak immediately. He let the silence stretch, letting the weight of the unanswered call press down on his cousin across the city. He could picture Vincenzo pacing in his high-rise penthouse office in downtown Chicago, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch, staring out at the glittering skyline he thought was already his.

"Vincenzo," Lorenzo finally said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that sounded like grinding stones.

The transmission on the other end went dead silent. The arrogant confidence evaporated in a single heartbeat, replaced by a sharp, breathless intake of air.

"L-Lorenzo?" Vincenzo’s voice cracked slightly, losing its polished veneer. "How... Alpha-One, what is—did you fail?"

"Alpha-One is currently taking a nap on my Persian rug, cousin," Lorenzo replied smoothly, his eyes locked on the ceiling as he savored the sheer terror leaking through the static of the speaker. "He brought a very nice submachine gun, but his manners leave much to be desired. I’m afraid he won’t be making it back to your payroll tonight."

"You—you're bluffing," Vincenzo stammered, his composure shattering entirely. "You can't even walk! You're confined to a chair like an invalid piece of furniture! How did—who helped you?"

"You underestimated the wrong people, Vincenzo," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "You thought because my legs don't work, my mind stopped functioning. You thought because I lost my physical mobility, I couldn't reach out and crush your windpipe from across the city."

"Listen to me, you crippled bastard!" Vincenzo screamed over the comms, panic completely overriding his corporate cool. "The board votes in three weeks! The shares are already shifting to my control! Isabella signed over her proxy yesterday! You have nothing! The Moretti empire belongs to me!"

"The Moretti empire belongs to whoever is strong enough to hold it," Lorenzo countered coldly. "And right now, you're holding sand. Sleep with one eye open, cousin. Because the next time I call you, it won't be on a radio."

Lorenzo clicked the transmission off, killing the connection with a decisive click, and tossed the radio onto the desk.

Elena stood by the window, peering carefully through the heavy velvet drapes down toward the darkened front gates of the estate. "He knows we're alive, Lorenzo. That means he'll send more. Professional cleaners. If they realize Alpha-One didn't report back within the hour, they'll surround the house."

"Let them try," Lorenzo said, pulling the Sig Sauer from where Elena had set it down on the edge of the desk, checking the loaded chamber with expert familiarity. "The estate is built like a fortress. My father designed it during the mob wars of the nineties. There are panic rooms, subterranean escape tunnels, and defensive choke points that Vincenzo has completely forgotten about."

"Escape tunnels?" Elena turned away from the window, her brow furrowing slightly. "We aren't running, Lorenzo. If we run, we look weak. If we run, Vincenzo takes control of the shipping lanes by tomorrow morning, and our families are dead meat."

Lorenzo stared at her, a profound wave of respect washing over him. The transactional bride his father had bought to secure a port alliance was gone. Standing before him was a general.

"Who said anything about running?" Lorenzo smiled, a fierce, feral expression that made his handsome face look dangerous. "We're going to use the tunnels to counter-attack."
