Chapter 4 - The Raid on Bellmere

By 4:00 AM, the storm outside had reached its peak, rain lashing against the high windows of the study like handfuls of gravel.

Inside, the room was quiet save for the rhythmic click of my fingers flying across the steel keyboard. Nathan sat in the armchair beside me, leaning over my shoulder, reviewing the live data feeds as I pulled back layer after layer of Victoria’s financial deception.

"It's worse than we thought," I said, highlighting a series of glowing red lines on the screen. "Look here."

Nathan leaned closer, his chest almost touching my shoulder. I could smell the faint scent of cedar and rain on his jacket.

"What am I looking at?" he asked.

"Victoria didn't just steal liquid cash," I explained, pointing to a complex derivative transfer routed through an IP address in Zurich. "She used your personal digital signature—which she extracted from your home office tablet—to grant Bellmere Holdings secondary voting rights in your flagship firm, Ashford Quantum."

Nathan’s breath hitched. "She tried to hijack my board seats?"

"She didn't just try; she succeeded," I revealed, turning the laptop toward him. "As of midnight last night, Bellmere Holdings controls four point eight percent of Ashford Quantum's Class-A voting stock. If her father combines those shares with the short-sellers on Wall Street at the opening bell on Friday, they can force an emergency board vote to remove you as CEO."

Nathan’s face turned white, then flushed with a terrifying, absolute fury. He stood up so fast his chair nearly tipped over.

"They aren't just trying to rob me," Nathan whispered, his voice trembling with rage. "They're trying to take my company."

"They're trying to execute a hostile takeover from inside your own bedroom," I corrected him. "And they have a proxy partner."

"Who?"

I clicked on a secondary folder I had decrypted from Victoria’s cloud backup, which she had naively synced to the mansion’s high-speed Wi-Fi network.

"Julian Vance," I said.

Nathan froze. "Vance? My Chief Operating Officer?"

"He's the one who authorized the internal API tokens that allowed Bellmere Holdings to bypass your CFO's daily compliance alerts," I said, pulling up a series of encrypted chat logs between Victoria and Vance. "They were planning to execute the board coup during your trip to Singapore. But because your flight was canceled due to engine trouble and you arrived two days early... you walked into the foyer right in the middle of their celebration."

Nathan looked at me, a mixture of shock and deep, profound gratitude in his eyes. "If you hadn't handed me that paper in the foyer tonight... if you had let Victoria intimidate you into leaving..."

"They would have executed the transfer on Friday morning, and you would have been locked out of your own headquarters by noon," I said simply.

Nathan walked over to his desk, picked up his encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a ten-digit number.

"Arthur," Nathan said into the phone, his voice cold and commanding. "Wake up the entire legal team. I want emergency injunctions filed in the Delaware Chancery Court before sunrise. I want freeze orders on every account associated with Bellmere Holdings, Richard Hale, and Julian Vance."

He paused, listening to his lawyer’s frantic response on the line.

"No, Arthur, I'm not crazy," Nathan snapped. "I have a full forensic audit report sitting right in front of me, executed by Elena Cruz. Yes, Deloitte's former lead investigator. Do not ask questions. Just draft the papers and meet me at the office at 6:00 AM."

He hung up the phone and looked back at me.

"Elena," Nathan said, his eyes burning with a dark, electric intensity. "How would you like to come with me to Ashford Quantum headquarters and help me personally fire my COO?"

May you like

I looked down at my maid’s apron, then up at the billionaire standing before me.

"I'd love to," I said, a faint, dangerous smile playing on my lips. "But first, I need to change out of this uniform."
