Chapter 8 - The Price of Freedom

Two weeks later.

The storm of scandals that had rocked Boston high society had finally settled.

Richard Hale, Victoria Hale, and Julian Vance were all held without bail in a federal detention center, facing dozens of felony counts that guaranteed they would spend the next fifteen to twenty years behind bars.

Inside the sunlit, top-floor office of Ashford Quantum Towers, I sat at my new executive desk, reviewing the final legal settlements.

The phone rang. It was my mother.

"Elena, sweetie!" my mother’s voice sobbed joyfully through the speaker. "I just received a letter from the bank! The mortgage on our house... it's completely paid off! And Clara's medical debt collection agency sent a notice saying our balance is zero!"

Tears of pure relief welled in my eyes. "It's real, Mom. It's completely over. You don't have to worry about the house ever again."

"Oh, thank God, Elena! How did you do it? Did your new firm give you an advance?"

"Something like that, Mom," I smiled, wiping a tear from my cheek. "I worked for a man who keeps his promises."

After hanging up with my mother, I packed my leather briefcase, stepped out of my office, and walked down the long glass hallway toward Nathan’s private corner suite.

The door was open. Nathan was standing by his grand desk, looking out over the panoramic view of the Boston harbor. He had taken off his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

He turned as he heard my footsteps. "Elena."

"The final audit reports are complete, Nathan," I said, setting a thick leather-bound file on his desk. "Every dollar stolen by Bellmere Holdings has been fully recovered and returned to Ashford Quantum's treasury. Your board seats are secure, your stock value has hit an all-time high, and your legal compliance framework is bulletproof."

Nathan didn't look at the file. He just looked at me.

"So," Nathan said softly, walking around his desk until he was standing just inches away from me. "Your contract is complete."

A heavy, bitter-sweet ache settled in my chest. "Yes. I've satisfied all the terms of our agreement. Your mother's medical debts are cleared, my sister's legacy is protected, and your company is safe."

"So you're leaving?" Nathan asked, his voice dropping into a quiet, tentative murmur.

I looked down at my hands. "I... I assumed my work here was done. You don't need a forensic auditor anymore, Nathan."

Nathan reached out, placing his hands gently on my shoulders. His touch sent a warm wave of electricity straight to my heart.

"I don't need an auditor, Elena," Nathan said, his dark eyes searching mine with a profound, unshakeable intensity. "I need you."

I looked up at him, my breath catching in my throat.

"For eight months, I lived in a world full of fake people," Nathan whispered, his thumb gently tracing the line of my jawline. "People who smiled at my face while plotting to steal everything I built. And then you walked into my life. You knelt on my floor, looked me in the eye, and handed me the truth when everyone else was telling me lies."

"Nathan..." I stammered.

"Don't go back to Deloitte, Elena," Nathan pleaded softly, leaning closer until his forehead rested gently against mine. "Stay here. Run this company with me. Build a life with me."

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time they weren't tears of grief or exhaustion—they were tears of pure, overwhelming happiness.

"Are you sure, Mr. Ashford?" I whispered with a faint, breathy laugh. "I hear I'm very expensive."

Nathan smiled—a bright, magnificent smile that lit up the entire room.

"You're priceless, Elena," he said.

And then he pulled me into his arms and kissed me. It wasn't a tentative kiss; it was deep, passionate, and filled with eight months of unspoken longing. I wrapped my arms around his neck, sinking into his warmth, knowing that I had finally found the place where I belonged.
