Chapter 7 - The Grand Entrance

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering gold, crystal chandeliers, and three hundred of New England's most powerful political and financial figures.
Flashbulbs popped continuously as photographers snapped pictures of senators, tech billionaires, and old-money heiresses mingling near the champagne fountains.
Standing near the center of the room, wearing an expensive black tuxedo, was Richard Hale. Beside him stood Victoria, wearing a staggering ten-thousand-dollar emerald gown, trying her best to put on a brave face for the socialites surrounding them.
"I hear Nathan canceled the engagement over a domestic dispute," a socialite whispered nearby. "Is it true, Victoria?"
"Oh, absolute nonsense!" Victoria laughed loudly, taking a sip of red wine, though her hands were faintly trembling. "Nathan just had a minor work crisis in Singapore. We're taking a brief pause to focus on our respective business ventures. He’ll be calling me by tomorrow morning, pleading for my forgiveness."
"I wouldn't bet on that, Victoria," a deep, chilling voice echoed through the ballroom.
The room went instantly dead quiet.
The grand double doors of the ballroom swung open, and Nathan Ashford walked in.
He looked extraordinarily handsome in a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo, carrying himself with the absolute, regal authority of a man who owned the city. But it wasn't Nathan who made three hundred socialites gasp in unison.
It was the woman on his arm.
I wore a breathtaking, floor-length backless gown of liquid silver silk that clung to my figure like a second skin. My dark hair fell in soft, elegant waves down my back, accented by a pair of drop-diamond earrings that Nathan had personally selected from his family’s private vault an hour earlier.
Victoria’s wineglass slipped from her hand, crashing onto the carpeted floor—a striking echo of the night she had thrown a glass at my feet in the foyer.
"You..." Victoria gasped, her eyes bulging in utter, unadulterated shock as she stared at me. "You... the maid!"
A collective murmur swept through the crowd like wildfire.
"Is that... isn't that the woman who was scrubbing his floors last week?" a guest whispered.
"Look at her diamonds! Look at the way she walks!" another exclaimed.
Richard Hale stepped forward, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he glared at Nathan. "Ashford! What is the meaning of this insult?! You bring a servant to the Metropolitan Gala to mock my daughter?!"
Nathan didn't lose his temper. He walked calmly into the center of the ballroom, his hand placed gently over mine on his arm, standing face-to-face with Richard Hale.
"I didn't bring a servant, Richard," Nathan said, his voice carrying clearly over the silent room. "I brought the woman who saved my enterprise from a family of aristocratic thieves."
"How dare you!" Richard Hale roared, stepping toward Nathan. "I will sue you for slander! I will destroy your stock value before midnight!"
"You can't liquidate the Swiss accounts, Richard," I said, stepping forward, my voice cool, smooth, and full of lethal confidence.
Richard Hale froze, staring at me. "What are you talking about, girl?"
"I'm talking about the secondary authentication codes for Bellmere Holdings' Zurich accounts," I said, pulling a thin gold drive from my silver clutch. "You thought you had until midnight to execute the wire transfer. But while you were dressing your daughter in emeralds for this gala, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority executed a emergency freeze based on the forensic evidence I submitted at 5:00 PM."
Richard Hale’s jaw dropped. He reached into his coat pocket, frantically pulling out his smartphone. His fingers scrambled over the screen as he opened his banking portal.
ACCOUNT FROZEN BY ORDER OF FEDERAL MAGISTRATE.
The red warning banner on his screen illuminated his pale, terrified face.
"No..." Hale whispered, his knees buckling slightly. "No! My eleven million dollars... my short positions..."
"It's over, Richard," Nathan said coldly.
The heavy doors of the ballroom opened once more. Four federal agents wearing dark suits and tactical badges walked into the room, heading straight toward Richard Hale and Victoria.
"Richard Hale! Victoria Hale!" the lead agent announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal bank fraud, corporate espionage, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent..."
Victoria let out a blood-curdling shriek as the cold steel clicked around her manicured wrists. "Nathan! Help me! Please! I love you! It was my father's idea! He made me do it!"
Nathan didn't say a word. He didn't even look at her as the agents dragged both Victoria and her father out of the grand ballroom in front of three hundred elite guests, their desperate screams fading into the night.
Nathan turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his.

"Thank you, Elena," he whispered.
