Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Crown

At 7:30 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Ashford Quantum Towers loomed over downtown Boston, its seventy stories glittering in the pale morning light.
A sleek black Maybach pulled up to the private executive entrance beneath the building. The chauffeur hurried around to open the door, and Nathan stepped out, looking immaculate in a fresh, tailor-made navy suit.
Beside him stepped me.
I was no longer wearing the faded linen apron or the practical work boots. Before leaving the estate, Nathan had instructed his personal stylist to deliver a selection of high-end business attire to the guest house. I now wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, an ivory silk blouse, and black leather heels. My dark hair was swept up into a sleek, professional twist.
The security guards at the front desk bowed their heads respectfully as Nathan stroled through the lobby, but their eyes widened in surprise when they saw the woman walking beside him with an encrypted tablet tucked under her arm.
"Good morning, Mr. Ashford," the head of building security said, stepping forward. "We weren't expecting you back from Singapore until tomorrow."
"Plans changed, Marcus," Nathan said without slowing down. "Is Mr. Vance in his office?"
"Yes, sir. He arrived thirty minutes ago. He scheduled an emergency executive committee meeting for 8:00 AM."
"Perfect," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Deactivate Julian Vance's security badge immediately. Cut off his access to the primary servers, and have four armed guards meet me outside the 70th-floor boardroom."
"Understood, sir!"
We stepped into the private executive elevator. As the doors closed, Nathan turned to look at me in the mirrored wall.
"Nervous?" he asked softly.
"I used to present financial fraud cases to federal grand juries, Nathan," I said, adjusting the cuffs of my suit jacket. "A corrupt COO doesn't intimidate me."
Nathan smiled—a real, breathtaking smile that reached his dark eyes. "I pity Julian Vance."
DING.
The elevator doors opened on the 70th floor.
The executive boardroom was a magnificent room encased in triple-pane glass, overlooking the foggy Boston harbor. Seated around the long mahogany table were ten senior board members, drinking coffee and reviewing financial portfolios. At the head of the table sat Julian Vance—a sharp-featured man in his late forties with slicked-back hair and a multi-thousand-dollar watch.
"...so if we execute the secondary share offering by Friday," Vance was saying to the board, "we can stabilize the stock before Nathan returns from—"
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.
Julian Vance stopped mid-sentence. The color drained from his face as Nathan walked into the room, followed by four armed security guards and me.
"Nathan!" Vance stammered, scrambling to his feet, trying to force a warm smile onto his pale face. "Darling... I mean, Nathan! You're back early! We... we were just discussing the Q4 projections!"
Nathan didn't say a word. He walked to the head of the table, stopped right beside Vance's chair, and looked down at his Chief Operating Officer.
"Julian," Nathan said quietly. "Get out of my seat."
Vance blinked nervously, looking at the other board members, who were all staring in confusion. "Nathan, please, what is the meaning of this? Is there a problem with the Singapore deal?"
"There's a problem with Bellmere Holdings," I said, stepping forward and laying my encrypted tablet flat on the center of the mahogany table.
Vance snapped his head toward me, his eyes narrowing in disdain. "Who the hell are you? Nathan, who is this woman? Why is she bringing random names into an executive board meeting?"
I tapped the tablet screen, activating the boardroom’s sixty-inch presentation display.
Instantly, the wall screen lit up with a high-definition diagram showing a massive web of offshore bank accounts, forged signatures, and illegal server access logs. Right at the center of the web were three high-resolution photographs: Victoria Hale, Richard Hale, and Julian Vance.
"My name is Elena Cruz," I said, my voice echoing with crisp, undeniable authority across the room. "And I am the Lead Forensic Auditor appointed by Mr. Ashford. Over the last six months, you, Miss Hale, and Mr. Hale have illegally diverted three point two million dollars of Ashford Quantum capital, while attempting to execute an illegal short-squeeze on Class-A voting shares."
The room erupted into frantic murmurs from the board members.
"This is outrageous!" Vance shouted, his face turning a deep, furious red. "This is a fabrication! Nathan, you're listening to a complete stranger! Where did you even find this woman?!"
"I found her in my house," Nathan said, stepping closer to Vance, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. "Where she was working as a housekeeper because corrupt, greedy parasites like you try to bleed honest people dry."
Nathan turned to the four security guards standing by the door.
"Escort Mr. Vance to his office. Let him collect his coat. Then escort him to the lobby, where two officers from the FBI Financial Crimes Division are currently waiting for him."
"Nathan! No! You can't do this! I built this company with you!" Vance screamed as the guards grabbed his arms, dragging him backward out of the boardroom, his fingernails clawing uselessly against the glass doors until his shrieks faded down the carpeted hallway.
The remaining nine board members sat in utter, terrified silence.

Nathan looked around the long mahogany table, then looked at me, holding out his hand toward the head of the table.
"Gentlemen," Nathan announced to his board, his voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Effective immediately, Julian Vance is terminated. And I would like to introduce you to Ashford Quantum's new Chief Risk and Compliance Officer—Elena Cruz."
