Chapter 9 - The Reckoning
Six months later.
The Federal Courthouse in downtown Boston was packed to maximum capacity.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant ivory dress, my hand securely held in Nathan’s warm grip.
At the defense table sat Richard Hale, Julian Vance, and Victoria Hale. They were dressed in drab orange prison jumpsuits, their hands handcuffed to their waist chains.
Victoria looked unrecognizable. The glamorous socialite who had once ordered me to clean broken glass with my bare hands was now hollow-eyed, her pale hair unwashed and tied back in a messy bun, her manicured nails gone.
The federal judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the bench.
"Will the defendants please rise for sentencing," the judge ordered.
The three defendants stood up slowly, trembling under the weight of approaching justice.
"For the charges of federal wire fraud, corporate espionage, grand larceny, and conspiracy," the judge declared, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "this court sentences Richard Hale to eighteen years in a federal penitentiary. Julian Vance is sentenced to fifteen years."
The judge paused, turning his cold gaze onto Victoria.
"And for her active role in the embezzlement scheme and attempt to defraud Ashford Capital, Victoria Hale is sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility without the possibility of parole."
Victoria burst into hysterical, uncontrollable sobs, falling backward into her chair as the federal marshals stepped forward to lead them away.
As she was being led toward the side exit, Victoria’s tear-filled eyes caught mine in the audience.
She looked at my ivory dress, the sparkling diamond ring on my finger, and the powerful billionaire holding my hand.

I didn't look at her with anger. I didn't look at her with hatred. I simply looked at her with the quiet, unshakeable dignity she had tried and failed to strip away from me on that rainy Tuesday night.
Victoria bowed her head in total defeat as the heavy steel doors closed behind her forever.
