Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Ward

The silence between them was heavy, filled with the ghost of Evelyn Vance and six years of buried family secrets.

"Why didn't you just come to the front door?" Nathan asked, his tone not accusatory, but raw with confusion. "Why apply as a maid through an agency? Why work sixteen-hour days, scrubbing floors and sleeping in the servant quarters until your body literally gave out?"

Claire pulled herself up against the pillows, her hands clutching the hospital blanket. "Because if I walked up to the gates of the Whitmore estate claiming to be Evelyn’s secret half-sister, your lawyers would have torn me apart. You would have assumed I was another opportunist trying to cash in on the Vance family trust."

"I would have checked her handwriting," Nathan said quietly. "I would have run a DNA test."

"And then what?" Claire countered, a sudden spark of fire igniting in her brown eyes despite her physical weakness. "You would have written me a check for five million dollars and sent me on my way! You would have treated me like a financial transaction—the same way you treat every problem in your life!"

Nathan winced as if she had struck him.

"Evelyn knew you, Nathan," Claire continued, her voice softer now, tinged with sadness. "She told me that you were a good man who had been turned into stone by wealth and responsibility. She said that after she died, you would surround yourself with employees, bodyguards, and advisors, but no one would actually care for Lucas and Owen. She made me swear I would enter your life from the bottom so I could see how my nephews were really being treated."

"They were treated with everything money could buy," Nathan said defensively, though the words sounded hollow even to his own ears.

"Money doesn't hold a crying five-year-old at two in the morning when he thinks he forgot his mother's voice!" Claire cried, her voice cracking. "Money doesn't sit on the floor playing with toy trains when an international conference call is waiting! Ruth Keller hasn't smiled at those boys once in three months! Your staff treats them like fragile porcelain vases that might break and cost them their jobs!"

Nathan dropped his head into his hands. The truth of her words shattered the remaining armor around his heart. He remembered Grant Mercer’s cold voice on the phone less than an hour ago: She’s staff, Nathan. Staff can be replaced.

He had built a fortress of cold efficiency to protect his broken heart, but in doing so, he had turned his home into a gilded prison for his children.

Before Nathan could speak, the heavy oak doors of the emergency room corridor swung open. Loud, sharp footsteps echoed against the tile.

Grant Mercer walked into the room, flanked by two men in dark business suits. Grant was fifty, impeccably groomed, and carried an aura of ruthless corporate ambition. As Chief Financial Officer of Whitmore Global, he had been Nathan’s right-hand man for a decade—and the chief architect of the twenty-two-million-dollar London acquisition.

"Nathan!" Grant barked, stepping into the room without knocking. "What in God's name are you doing? The London board has called off the dinner. Lord Harrington is threatening to sign with the Singapore consortium if you aren't on a private jet by eight tonight!"

Nathan didn't stand up. He slowly lifted his head, his eyes fixing on Grant with an icy calm that made the CFO pause.

"I am where I need to be, Grant," Nathan said softly.

Grant looked down at Claire, his lip curling in disdain. "Over a housemaid? Nathan, this is madness! You're letting a domestic employee derail a deal that took three years to assemble! I’ve already called the agency. They are sending a replacement maid to the estate, and I’ve instructed security to clear this girl’s personal belongings out of the staff quarters by midnight."

Claire shrank back against her pillows, her hand tightening around her blanket.

Nathan stood up slowly. Standing at six-foot-two, his broad frame cast a towering shadow over Grant Mercer.

"Read her name on that chart, Grant," Nathan commanded, pointing a long finger at the medical file hanging at the foot of the bed.

Grant scoffed, glancing at the clipboard. "Claire Bennett. So what?"

"Her name is Claire Vance Bennett," Nathan said, every word dripping with absolute authority. "She is Evelyn’s sister. She is my sons' aunt. And she is a member of the Whitmore family."

Grant’s jaw dropped. The two executives behind him exchanged stunned, panicked glances.

"Effective immediately," Nathan continued, stepping directly into Grant’s personal space, "you are relieved of your duties regarding the London acquisition. Turn over your encrypted files to Vance Legal by five PM."

"Nathan, you can't be serious!" Grant stammered, his face flushing red. "You're throwing away twenty-two million dollars for a ghost story!"

"I am throwing away a man who thinks human beings are disposable," Nathan replied coldly. "Get out of my sight before I have hospital security throw you into the street."
