Chapter 3 - The Return to the Estate

By midnight, the storm outside the hospital had turned into a steady, rhythmic rain.
Dr. Aris had agreed to discharge Claire under strict conditions: forty-eight hours of total bed rest, intravenous vitamin supplements delivered by a private nurse, and a complete cessation of any physical labor.
Nathan’s private driver pulled the heavy black Maybach up to the main portico of the Whitmore estate in Westchester. The iron gates, which usually felt like the entrance to a cold fortress, opened silently under the moonlight.
Inside the vehicle, Lucas and Owen were asleep, their small heads resting against Claire’s lap. Claire sat in the back seat, wearing a soft cashmere sweater and sweatpants that Nathan had ordered his personal assistant to purchase from an upscale boutique near the hospital. The plain housekeeper’s uniform had been thrown in the trash.
"You don't have to stay in the servant quarters anymore," Nathan said from the front passenger seat, looking back at her through the mirror. "Evelyn’s former suite on the second floor has been prepared for you."
Claire looked out the rain-slicked window at the towering brick manor. "Nathan, I didn't come here to live like an heiress. I came to take care of the boys."
"And you will," Nathan said softly. "But you will do it as their aunt, not as an employee. I was blind, Claire. I let my grief turn me into a monster. But watching you lie on that stone path today... realizing that my sons had found more warmth in three weeks with you than in two years with me... it woke me up."
The Maybach came to a smooth halt.
When the front doors opened, the entire household staff—twelve butler, chefs, and groundskeepers—were lined up in the grand foyer, looking tense and uncertain. News of Grant Mercer’s sudden firing and the mysterious identity of the new housekeeper had already spread through the estate like wildfire.
Standing at the head of the line was Ruth Keller, the head housekeeper. Her hands were shaking violently behind her back, her face pale with terror.
Nathan stepped into the foyer carrying a sleeping Lucas in his arms, while Claire followed slowly, holding Owen’s small hand.
"Ruth," Nathan said, his voice echoing off the double-curved marble staircases.
"Mr. Whitmore," Ruth stammered, stepping forward with a slight bow. "I... I have packed Claire’s things from the quarters as Mr. Mercer instructed earlier... I mean, Miss Bennett's things..."
"Ruth," Nathan interrupted, his eyes fixed on the woman who had given Claire unauthorized medication. "You served my family for eight years. But when an employee under your supervision collapsed twice from exhaustion, you chose to hide it to protect your department's reputation. You gave a severely malnourished woman prescription medication that could have killed her."
Ruth burst into tears. "Sir, she begged me! She said she needed the job!"
"And it was your responsibility as a supervisor to protect her," Nathan said firmly. "You are terminated, effective tonight. You will receive two months' severance, but you will vacate the premises by eight AM tomorrow."
A collective gasp went through the remaining staff. Never in the history of the Whitmore estate had Nathan taken such swift, sweeping domestic action.
Nathan turned to the remaining staff members. "From this moment forward, Miss Claire Bennett is the co-guardian of my sons and a full member of this household. Her word carries the same authority as mine. Is that understood?"

"Yes, Mr. Whitmore," the staff responded in unison.
Claire looked at Nathan, her brown eyes filled with a mixture of overwhelming relief and deep, quiet respect. For the first time since she had walked through those iron gates three weeks ago, she felt the crushing weight of her burden begin to lift.
