Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Vance Legacy

The following morning, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the second-floor master suite.

Claire woke up in a massive king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets. For a long moment, she forgot where she was. She didn't hear the harsh 5:00 AM alarm that usually summoned her to the industrial kitchen to prepare breakfast for fifteen staff members and the family. Instead, she heard the faint, joyous sound of children laughing outside in the gardens.

She walked to the window and pushed aside the heavy velvet drapes.

Down on the rolling green lawn, Nathan Whitmore was down on his hands and knees in the grass. He was wearing a plain grey t-shirt and sweatpants—a sight Claire had never once witnessed during her tenure as a maid. Lucas and Owen were taking turns jumping onto his back, squealing with delight as the billionaire millionaire rolled over and tackled them gently into a pile of autumn leaves.

A soft knock sounded at her door.

"Come in," Claire called out.

Nathan walked into the room carrying a tray containing a pot of fresh chamomile tea, warm croissants, sliced strawberries, and a small vase holding a single red rose.

"You're not supposed to be serving me," Claire said, a small, genuine smile lighting up her face.

"Consider it back pay for the three weeks of sixteen-hour shifts," Nathan said, setting the tray gently on the bedside table. "How are you feeling?"

"Better," she admitted, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking a sip of the warm tea. "My head isn't spinning anymore."

Nathan sat down in the armchair across from her, his expression turning serious. "While you were sleeping, Vance Legal finished running a background audit on Arthur Vance’s estate—your father's estate."

Claire’s smile faded slightly. "I don't want anything from his estate, Nathan. He abandoned my mother when I was four years old. Evelyn was the only good thing that ever came from that bloodline."

"I know," Nathan said gently. "But there’s something you need to see."

He pulled a thin leather portfolio from under his arm and opened it on his lap.

"When Arthur Vance died four years ago," Nathan explained, "his primary holding company, Vance Logistics, was supposed to be divided equally between Evelyn and a trust for his remaining heirs. But his long-time business manager—a man named Richard Sterling—falsified documents claiming Arthur died insolvent."

Claire frowned. "Insolvent? My father was a multi-millionaire."

"He was," Nathan said, his eyes darkening. "Sterling hid over forty million dollars in offshore shell accounts. And do you know who Sterling’s chief financial advisor was for the last five years?"

A cold pit formed in Claire’s stomach. "Grant Mercer."

"Grant Mercer," Nathan confirmed, nodding slowly. "Grant didn't just happen to work for me, Claire. He deliberately sought out a position as CFO of Whitmore Global six years ago. He knew that if you or Evelyn ever discovered the hidden Vance assets, his entire fraud would crumble. That’s why he was so desperate to have you removed from this house yesterday. He recognized your name from the Vance family trust files."

Claire set her tea cup down, her hands trembling slightly. "So my fainting spell... my collapse at the gate... it didn't just save my life. It exposed the man who robbed my family?"

"It did more than that," Nathan said, leaning forward and placing his large, warm hand over hers. "It brought you back to where you belong. And now, Claire, we are going to make Grant Mercer pay for every single thing he took from you and Evelyn."
