Chapter 7 - The Trial and the Truth
In February, the federal trial of Grant Mercer and Richard Sterling began in downtown Manhattan.
Though Grant’s high-priced legal team attempted to portray the financial irregularities as complex corporate restructuring, the evidence compiled by Vance Legal and Nathan’s personal investigators was overwhelming.
On the third day of the trial, Claire took the witness stand.
Dressed in a simple, elegant dark suit, she delivered her testimony with absolute clarity. She detailed her mother's poverty, her father's abandonment, Evelyn’s tragic death, and the systematic fraud that had kept her working three minimum-wage jobs while millions of dollars belonging to her family sat in offshore accounts.
Her testimony captivated the courtroom and shattered Grant Mercer’s defense.
When the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation, Grant Mercer was found guilty on all twelve counts of fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. He was sentenced to sixteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
As Nathan and Claire walked down the marble steps of the courthouse following the verdict, a swarm of reporters and news cameras surrounded them.
"Miss Bennett!" a journalist shouted over the crowd. "Is it true you worked as a housekeeper for Mr. Whitmore before discovering your fortune?"
Nathan stopped, wrapping a protective arm around Claire’s waist, and faced the bank of microphones.

Claire looked up at Nathan, her face shining with pride and love. The cameras captured the moment—a photograph that would feature on the cover of national newspapers the following morning, signaling the end of a tragedy and the rise of a new family.
