Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Boardroom

Three days later, the high-rise headquarters of Whitmore Global in downtown Manhattan was bustling with activity.
At 10:00 AM, an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors had been convened in the executive conference room on the 60th floor. Grant Mercer sat at the head of the long marble table, surrounded by six senior board members who had been summoned on short notice.
"Gentlemen," Grant announced, shuffling a stack of financial reports with practiced ease. "As you know, Nathan Whitmore has suffered a severe personal breakdown following the cancellation of the London acquisition. He has abandoned his duties, fired key executive staff without board approval, and brought a domestic employee into his personal estate under dubious circumstances."
The board members murmured among themselves, looking uncomfortable.
"Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws," Grant continued, a triumphant gleam in his eye, "the board has the authority to vote for a temporary suspension of the Chief Executive Officer’s voting power if he is deemed mentally or emotionally unfit to serve. I motion that we appoint an interim committee—led by myself—to take control of the pending European distribution deals."
"Seconded," one of Grant’s bought directors called out immediately.
"Before we take a vote," a clear, powerful voice echoed from the rear of the boardroom, "perhaps the board would like to see the secondary audit report."
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Nathan Whitmore stepped into the room, dressed in an immaculate dark charcoal suit, carrying an aura of absolute power that made every director in the room instantly sit up straighter.
Beside him walked Claire Bennett. She wore a tailored ivory business suit, her dark hair styled in a sleek, elegant bob, her chin held high with unshakeable confidence. Behind them followed three Federal marshals and two senior partners from Vance Legal.
Grant Mercer froze, his face draining of all color. "Nathan... what is the meaning of this? Unauthorized personnel are not allowed in executive sessions!"
"Miss Bennett isn't unauthorized personnel, Grant," Nathan said, his voice echoing off the glass walls overlooking the Manhattan skyline. "She is the majority shareholder of Vance Logistics—which, as of nine o'clock this morning, owns sixteen percent of Whitmore Global's preferred voting stock."
A wave of shock rippled through the boardroom.
"That's impossible!" Grant shouted, slamming his hands onto the table. "Arthur Vance’s estate was liquidated four years ago!"
"It was liquidated fraudulently by you and Richard Sterling," Claire said, stepping forward. Her voice was steady, calm, and filled with righteous authority. "This morning, the Southern District Court of New York unsealed twelve shell accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under your name, Grant. Accounts containing thirty-four million dollars stolen from my sister and me."
The lead Federal marshal stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Grant Mercer," the marshal stated firmly, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."
Grant stumbled backward, looking around the table at his fellow directors, but every single man turned his head away in disgust. As the marshals stepped forward and slapped the cold iron cuffs around Grant’s wrists, he looked at Nathan with pure venom.

"You ruined everything for a maid!" Grant spat as he was led away.
Nathan looked at him with cool, unwavering eyes. "She was never a maid, Grant. She was the piece of my life I didn't know was missing."
