Chapter 12 - The Hive of Shadows

The war room beneath the Moretti estate was a vaulted chamber built during the Prohibition era, reinforced with steel plating and equipped with satellite tracking consoles, encrypted monitors, and weapons armories. For six months, this room had gathered dust while Gabriel and Claire built their charitable foundation. Tonight, it hummed with deadly purpose.

Gabriel stood before a giant digital map of Harbor City, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the ancient tattoos and scars that carved across his forearms. Claire stood beside him, her eyes scanning the glowing blue lines representing the city’s trade corridors, shipping channels, and black-market transit routes.

"Dante Vane didn't operate alone ten years ago," Gabriel explained, pointing a pointer toward the northern docklands known as the Rust Belt. "He managed a ring of underground safehouses, illegal arms depots, and human trafficking hubs. When I seized control of Harbor City, I purged those networks. But Dante kept his ghost files."

"If he came back, he needed capital and firepower," Claire said, leaning over the console. "Burning Pier 42 was a public demonstration to signal to the old crime syndicates that the Moretti crown is vulnerable. He wants the rival families to rally behind him."

"And Arthur’s daughter, Evelyn, is his leverage," Richard Cole added, stepping into the war room with a hot cup of coffee for Claire. He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp. "Arthur is currently resting upstairs under heavy guard. He gave us every communication log, IP address, and financial transfer Dante’s proxies used to blackmail him."

Marco rushed down the iron spiral staircase, holding a encrypted flash drive. "Boss, we tracked the signal from the call Dante made to your cell. It was bounced through three dummy servers in Switzerland, but the raw ping originated from a abandoned cold-storage packing plant in the Ironworks District—Sector 4."

Gabriel’s eyes hardened. "Sector 4. That’s old Vance territory. It’s a maze of underground tunnels connected to the storm drainage system."

"It’s a trap, Gabriel," Claire said immediately, turning to face him. "He wants you to charge in there with a full tactical team so he can detonate the tunnels or ambush you."

"I know," Gabriel replied, a cold, calculated smile touching his lips. "Which is why I’m not going in through the front door. And I’m not going in alone."

"You're not going without me," Claire said firmly, crossing her arms.

"Claire, it's too dangerous—" Richard began, but Claire held up a hand.

"Dante thinks I’m a fragile civilian high-society wife that Gabriel shelters," Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "He expects Gabriel to play the enraged husband. If Gabriel moves alone, Dante predicts every step. But if we play a completely different game—a public offensive while we strike his shadow operations simultaneously—we break his script."

Gabriel stared at his wife. The proud, fierce flame in his chest burned brighter. "What's the plan, Mrs. Moretti?"

"At eight o'clock tomorrow morning, I will hold an emergency press conference at City Hall," Claire revealed, her dark eyes flashing. "I will announce a twenty-million-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the arsonists, and I will publicly name Dante Vane’s front corporations. I will freeze his money through Arthur’s legal network before he can pay off his mercenaries. While every police camera and Syndicate eye is fixed on me at City Hall, you and Marco breach Sector 4 and rescue Evelyn."

Gabriel grabbed her hand, squeezing it tight. "You’re making yourself the target."

"I’ve been the target since the day I married you, Gabriel," Claire whispered back, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."
