Chapter 17 - The Unraveling Thread

Three weeks after the battle on Blackwood Bridge, the aftermath sent seismic shocks through every level of Harbor City's political and corporate infrastructure.
With Julian Sterling and Dante Vane in federal custody, their testimony under intensive interrogation revealed a massive spiderweb of corruption. Over forty high-ranking corporate executives, corrupt police officials, and syndicate financiers were indicted in the largest federal bust in state history.
The Cole Legal Group, led by Richard Cole and a deeply humbled Arthur Price, spearheaded the asset forfeiture proceedings. Billions of dollars in seized illegal corporate wealth were funneled directly into public infrastructure, public healthcare, and the Moretti Community Logistics Initiative.
Inside the master suite of the Moretti estate, morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling French doors.
Claire sat at her vanity mirror, combing her dark brown hair. She wore a soft silk robe. The bruises on her wrists from the zip-ties had faded into faint, pale lines.
Gabriel stepped up behind her, wearing a soft grey sweater and dark trousers. He placed his hands on her shoulders, leaning down to press a soft kiss against the crown of her head.
"You're quiet this morning, Mrs. Moretti," Gabriel said, watching her reflection in the mirror.
"I was just thinking about how much everything has changed," Claire murmured, placing her hand over his. "A year ago, I was fighting just to keep my father's firm alive. I thought power meant sitting in boardrooms and outsmarting arrogant men."
"And now?" Gabriel asked gently.
"Now I know power is knowing that no matter how dark the world gets, you have someone who will tear down bridges to keep you safe," Claire smiled softly, turning in her chair to look up at him. "And knowing that you have the strength to stop them from losing their soul in the process."
Gabriel smiled—that rare, warm smile that softened his hard features. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.
Claire blinked. "Gabriel... what is that? It's not my birthday."
"It's not a gift for an occasion," Gabriel said, kneeling on one knee before her chair, holding the velvet box open.
Inside rested a simple, stunning ring crafted from polished dark platinum, embedded with a single, glowing emerald flanked by two small, flawless diamonds.
"When we got married, it was under a cloud of duty, protection, and strategy," Gabriel said, his dark voice filled with profound emotion. "I never gave you a proper proposal. I never asked if you wanted this life with me."
Claire felt a warmth bloom in her chest, her dark eyes sparkling with sudden tears.
"Claire Cole," Gabriel said, looking deep into her eyes. "You healed my broken heart. You saved my soul. Will you stay by my side, not just as my wife in name, but as my partner, my equal, and my absolute queen for the rest of our lives?"

Claire didn't answer with words. She leaned forward, wrapping her arms around his broad neck, and kissed him deeply, passionately, pouring all her devotion into him.
"Yes," Claire whispered against his lips when they finally parted. "A thousand times, yes."
