Chapter 8 - The Terms of Mercy

The quiet in the sun porch stretched long and heavy.

Gabriel stepped into the room. His presence alone made Arthur Price press his forehead lower against the cold stone floor.

"Claire," Gabriel said softly, looking at his wife. "It is your decision."

Richard Cole looked up, hope flared in his bloodshot eyes. "Mrs. Moretti... please..."

Claire looked down at the deed for the dealerships on the glass table. Then she looked at Gabriel.

"I don't want fifty-one percent of a car business, Gabriel," Claire said quietly.

Richard’s face fell back into despair.

"However," Claire continued, turning back to Richard, "I do not want three hundred innocent employees to lose their jobs because your daughter was raised without manners."

She picked up the leather folder and handed it back to Richard Cole.

"You will keep your dealerships, Mr. Cole," Claire declared. "On three conditions."

Richard grabbed the folder like a drowning man grasping a life raft. "Anything! Name anything, Mrs. Moretti!"

"First," Claire said, holding up one finger. "You will establish an anti-bullying and digital ethics education trust fund, seeded with two million dollars from your personal accounts. It will be administered by the Harbor City Public School District."

Richard nodded frantically. "Done! I’ll write the check today!"

"Second," Claire continued, looking straight at Madison. "Madison will delete all her social media accounts—permanently. She will perform two hundred hours of community service at the Harbor City Food Pantry. Under my direct supervision."

Madison looked up, blinking through her tears. She didn't argue. She didn't pout.

"Yes," Madison whispered, bowing her head. "I'll do it. I swear I'll do it."

"And third," Claire said, turning to Arthur Price, who was still kneeling on the floor. "Your son Evan will leave Harbor City. He will spend two years working at a legal aid clinic in the rural counties, helping low-income families who cannot afford representation. If he leaves early, or if I hear a single complaint about his behavior, your firm’s accounts will be frozen permanently."

Arthur Price began to weep with profound relief, bowing until his forehead touched Claire’s leather shoes. "Thank you, Mrs. Moretti... thank you for your grace... God bless you..."

Gabriel stood near the window, his eyes fixed on Claire.

He had expected her to ask for money. He had expected her to ask for public humiliations. He had spent his life in a world where mercy was considered a dangerous liability.

Yet here was his wife, taking three broken, arrogant families and forcing them to become useful to the world they had spent years looking down upon.

"You heard my wife," Gabriel said, his cold voice cutting through the men's sobs. "Get out of my house."
