Chapter 14 - The Poisoned Trident

Back at City Hall, the press conference had just wrapped up. Claire was walking back through the grand marble corridor toward her secure motorcade, escorted by her father and security guards.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway swung shut with a loud metallic thud. The lights in the high ceiling flickered and died, plunging the vast marble corridor into dim emergency lighting.
"What's going on?" Richard asked, stepping protectively in front of Claire.
Before the security guards could draw their weapons, four men in tactical gear emerged from the side administrative offices. They fired silenced tranquilizer darts with lethal precision. Claire’s three bodyguards collapsed instantly, twitching as the powerful neurotoxins paralyzed their nervous systems.
"Claire! Run!" Richard yelled, reaching for his own suit coat pocket.
A heavy hand clamped over Richard’s mouth, throwing him to the floor. A man stepped out from the central archway—not a masked mercenary, but a man in a bespoke three-piece Italian suit.
It was Julian Sterling, the former CEO of the Sterling Logistics Conglomerate—the very corporation Claire had bankrupted through anti-monopoly lawsuits two months prior.
"Hello, Claire," Julian said smoothly, stepping over a fallen guard. He held a small, silver remote control detonator in his hand. "Did you really think a few court orders could destroy a family that ran this city for fifty years?"
Claire stood her ground, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her face remained an unreadable mask of ice. "Julian. I thought you fled to Monaco."
"Monaco is boring," Julian replied, walking slowly toward her. "I prefer Harbor City. Especially when it’s undergoing a change of management. You and your street-thug husband tried to turn our profit margins into charity work. You ruined my family's legacy."
"Your family built its legacy on extortion, human trafficking, and poisoned pharmaceutical distribution," Claire retorted venomously. "Gabriel and I didn't ruin you. You ruined yourselves."
Julian smiled thinly. He motioned to his men, who grabbed Claire’s arms and restrained her wrists behind her back with heavy zip-ties. They dragged Richard to his feet, binding him as well.
"Gabriel just rescued Arthur’s daughter at Sector 4," Julian said, checking his luxury wristwatch. "Dante played his part well. He was the bait. He drew Gabriel away so I could collect the real prize—you."
"Gabriel will kill you, Julian," Claire said softly, her dark eyes locking onto Julian with an intensity that made the billionaire step back half a pace. "He won't just defeat you. He will erase your name from history."

"He won't get the chance," Julian sneered. "By the time Gabriel arrives here, you and your father will be on a private cargo flight out of international waters. And Gabriel will receive a simple choice: hand over full legal ownership of the Moretti shipping empire and the city ports, or watch you drown live on an encrypted feed."
Julian pressed a button on his radio headset. "Bring the van around to the basement loading bay. We move now."
