Chapter 3 - The Sunrise Reversal

At exactly 6:00 AM, Daniel’s laptop chimed with a series of red notifications. We were sitting in the hospital waiting room, drinking bitter black coffee. I hadn't slept a wink, but Daniel looked as sharp and awake as if he were standing in a courtroom.

"We got them," Daniel said, turning the screen toward me.

On the monitor, a complex financial flow chart showed Kyle and Vanessa's joint checking account. A bright red text block read: ASSETS FROZEN BY FEDERAL ORDER - CASE FILE #E-4492.

"The federal judge signed the emergency injunction at 4:30 AM," Daniel explained, his fingers typing furiously. "The title company was hit with a cease-and-desist order. The sale of Mom’s house has been legally reversed due to suspected criminal forgery. The buyer’s money is safely back in escrow, and Kyle’s personal accounts—including the money he used to rent that penthouse—have been locked shut."

"What about Vanessa?" I asked, a wave of cold satisfaction washing over me.

"Her accounts are frozen too. And there’s more," Daniel smiled coldly. "Marcus tracked the notary who stamped the fraudulent deed. He’s a crooked variable-rate broker named Miller who takes bribes under the table. When federal agents knocked on his door an hour ago, he broke down in tears. He’s already signed a full confession stating that Vanessa paid him $5,000 to notarize the document without my mother being present."

My phone suddenly began to vibrate wildly. The caller ID showed Kyle’s name.

Daniel took the phone from my hand and swiped to answer, putting it on speaker.

"Claire! What the hell did you do?!" Kyle screamed into the line, his voice cracking with pure panic. "My credit cards just got declined at the hotel restaurant! Vanessa tried to access her banking app and it says our identity credentials have been suspended! Is this your government husband’s doing?!"

Daniel leaned close to the microphone. "Hello, Kyle. This isn't Claire. This is the government accountant. I suggest you look out your window right now."
